I stand behind a tree trunk, watching the chickens scratching the ground at the foot of the
w i r e f e n c e o f a h o us e . I r e a c h m y h a n ds o u t t o s n a t c h t h e n e a r e s t c h i c k e n w h e n a y o u n g l a d y
c o m e s o u t o f t h e h o us e , c a r r y i n g a c o n t a i n e r o f f o o d . T h e c h i c k e n s s t o p s c r a t c h i n g a n d r u n
a w a y.
T h e l a d y i s s e t t i n g u p a s t a n d s e l l i n g o n l y r i c e s o u p s e r v e d w i t h a m i x o f d i ff e r e n t m e a t s .
S h e s e t s d o w n a c o n t a i n e r f u l l o f s h r e d d e d m e a t o n t h e c o u n t e r, a n d t h e n w a l k s b a c k i n t o t h e
h o u s e . I d a s h t o t h e s t a n d , a n d g r a b a h a n d f u l o f t h e m e a t a n d s t uff i t i n t o m y m o u t h . T h e
l a d y a g a i n a p p e a r s a t t h e d o o r, a n d I r u n a w a y.
She shrieks, “Who took some of the meat?”
H e r v o i c e s o u n ds f a m i l i a r, s o I s t o p a n d t h e n w a l k b a c k . “ O h , B o n g , t h a t ’s y o u . W h e r e ’s
the baby?”
Bong says, “Oh, Mai. I’m happy to see you again. My baby girl is in the house with her
g r a n d m a . We m o v e d f r o m D a n a n g t o h e r e . ”
I s m i l e . “ I f I w e r e n o t i n a h u r r y, I ’ d t a k e y o u a n d y o u r b a b y h o m e t o M o m . I ’ m s o r r y f o r
ruining your business by eating some of the meat.”
“ I t ’s O K . I ’ l l m a k e d o w i t h w h a t I h a v e , ” B o n g s a y s .
S h e l a d l e s t h e r i c e s o u p i n t o a b o w, p u t s a l o t o f m e a t o n t o p o f t h e s o u p , a n d p u s h es t h e
bowl toward me. “Go ahead and eat.”
T h e b a c k y a r d o f B o n g ’s h o us e j o i n s t h e b a c k y a r d o f a b i g h o us e . A t r i b u t a r y o f t h e G o l d
N u g g e t s R i v e r r u ns t h r o u g h t h e o t h e r h o u s e ’s b a c k y a r d . T h e r e ’ r e g l o w i n g r o c k s i n t h e
t r i b u t a r y. I s a y, “ W h a t ! H ow d i d t h e g l o w i n g r o c k s g e t h e r e ? ”
Bong says, “Climate Change has caused the Gold Nuggets River to push the glowing rocks
i n t o t h i s t r i b u t a r y. ”
“ C a n I t a k e s o m e o f t h e r o c k s h e r e ? ” I s a y.
B o n g s a y s , “ T h e r o c k s a r e o n s o m e o n e e l s e ’s p r o p e r t y. Yo u n e e d t o a s k t h e o w n e r. I h a v e
n e v e r s e e n t h e ow n e r, b u t I ’ v e s e e n t h e V C s r u n n i n g a r o u n d o n t h e p r o p e r t y. B u t w h y a r e y o u
interested in the rocks?”
“I want to make cosmetics with them, and sell the makeup.”
B o n g s a y s . “ I g u e s s n o o n e c a r e s i f y o u t a k e t h e m . I ’ d l i k e t o b r i n g m y b a b y t o s h ow h e r t o
y o u r m o m a f t e r I ’ m d o n e s e l l i n g t h e s o u p t o d a y i f i t ’s O K w i t h y o u . We ’ l l s e e y o u a t y o u r
house.”

Bong hands me a package wrapped in banana leaves. “I saved some meat for you to take
back to the tunnels.”
I w a l k i n t o t h e k i t c h e n , Ti n a n d H o a a r e t a l k i n g w i t h M r s . H e n . I u nw r a p t h e p a c k a g e a n d
put it down in front of them.
“ M r s . H e n , d o y o u k n ow o f a w o m a n n a m e d Ti e n S t i l w e l l ? ” Ti n s a y s .
Mrs. Hen says, “Oh, yes. I saw her in an area of fortified tunnels where there are glowing
rocks. Is she your mother?”
Ti n s m i l e s . “ W h e n w e g e t o u t o f h e r e , I ’ l l g o l o o k f o r m y m o m . Wi l l y o u p l e a s e g o w i t h
m e a n d s h ow m e w h e r e y o u s a w h e r ? ”
“ I ’ l l g o f o r s u r e , ” M r s . H e n s a ys .

stack of blank sheets of paper toward me. “Our spies reported that an American POW had
c o m m u n i c a t e d s o m e s e c r e t s t o y o u . Yo u m u s t w r i t e a c o n f e s s i o n o f y o u r c r i m e s . ”

I run to the kitchen. “Mrs. Hen, you’ve got mail.”
M r s . H e n r i p s o p e n t h e e n v e l o p e a n d l o o k s a t t h e l e t t e r, h e r h a n d s s h a k i n g . “ M y L a i , m y
d a u g h t e r. T h i s i s h e r h a n d w r i t i n g . ” S h e h a n d s t h e l e t t e r t o m e , s a y i n g i n a c h o k i n g v o i c e ,
“Please read it to me.”

T h e V C s a r e r u n n i n g a r o u n d i n t h e t u n n e l s , t r y i n g t o g e t i n t o h i d i n g . We g o d o w n t o t h e

H o a s a y s , “ T h e f i r s t a c t i o n i s t o l e t a d o g g e t o n t h e h a n d l e o f t h e b u c k e t . B u t w h e r e ’s t h e
dog?”
T h e d o g t h a t d e l i v e r e d t h e e n v e l o p e t o m e a p p e a r s a t t h e t u n n e l ’s e n t r a n c e , c o m e s t o t h e
w e l l , a n d j u m p s o n t o t h e b u c k e t ’s h a n d l e . Ti n l o w e r s t h e b u c k e t h a l f w a y i n t o t h e w e l l , a n d
the dog jumps into a square hole cut in the wall.
I s a y, “ L e t m e t i e k n o t s o n t h e r o p e t o m a k e h a n d h o l d s a n d f o o t h o l d s . T h e n w e c a n t a k e
turns climbing down the rope and get into the hole in the wall.”

cooking smoke from the kitchens of many tunnels to escape to the outside. This tunnel

through the iron grate blocking the opening. I see my bedroom lighted by my baby Moons
a n d b a b y S u ns . I p u l l t h e b o l t o ff t h e g r a t e , a n d M r s . H e n , H o a , Ti n a n d I c r a w l t h r o u g h t h e
o p e n i n g i n t o m y b e d r o o m . We w a l k i n t o t h e l i v i n g r o o m , a n d B o n g h o l d i n g h e r b a b y g i r l ,
Miss My Lai and Mom turn and look at us.
I s a y, “ M o m , I f o u n d s u n a n d m o o n r o c k s a t a p r o p e r t y, w i t h i t s b a c k y a r d j o i n i n g B o n g ’s
b a c k y a r d . t h e r e a r e t a m a r i n d s h e l l s a t t h e b a c k y a r d f e n c e o f t h e p r o p e r t y. ”
When we are by ourselves, Mom says, “When we have the time, I’d like to go with you to
s e e t h a t p r o p e r t y. ”
