Extended essay - Reflections on planning and progress form

Candidate: This form is to be completed by the candidate during the course and completion of their EE. This document
records reflections on your planning and progress, and the nature of your discussions with your supervisor. You must
undertake three formal reflection sessions with your supervisor: The first formal reflection session should focus on your initial
ideas and how you plan to undertake your research; the interim reflection session is once a significant amount of your research
has been completed, and the final session will be in the form of a viva voce once you have completed and handed in your EE.
This document acts as a record in supporting the authenticity of your work. The three reflections combined must amount to no
more than 500 words.

The completion of this form is a mandatory requirement of the EE. It must be submitted together with the completed
EE for assessment under Criterion E. As per the ‘Protocols for completing and submitting the Reflections on
planning and progress form’ section of the EE guide, a mark of 0 will be awarded by the examiner for criterion E if
the RPPF is blank or the comments are written in a language other than that of the accompanying essay.

Supervisor: You must have three reflection sessions with each candidate, one early on in the process, an interim meeting
and then the final viva voce. Other check-in sessions are permitted but do not need to be recorded on this sheet. After each
reflection session candidates must record their reflections and as the supervisor you must indicate the month that the
reflection session took place, the candidate’s year of DP study at that time and initial this form.

First reflection session

Candidate comments:

For a few months I had been thinking about a topic for the extended Essay, the only thing I knew was that I wanted
something related to Business Management, when the time passed, I started noticing that I really enjoyed topics related to
Marketing so I searched what aspect I could aboard. Finally, I realised that virtual advertising was a good theme, so in my
first meeting with my assessor, I told her about my interests and she recommend me looking for something which language I
could analyse and, in that way, have a successful experience. After that, I searched for some commercials and campaigns
that had an important impact and I found the “Dumb Ways to Die Campaign” and I thought it was very captivating so I
decided to use it for my question, also including the specific place and date I will analyse in the future.

Interim reflection
Candidate comments:

Since the first interview for the EE I have a more clear view of what I need to look for in order to achieve the main objectives
of the extended essay. I was able to find a wide range of information that could be used: web pages, articles, videos,
interviews, and many others to explore before starting the first chapters. While I was making the index, I had to choose
different points of evaluation to the theme and something that helped me during that process was writing down on a separate
document, as many quotes as I found about the topic. Thanks to that, I had a way of supporting many of my ideas through
the essay. That would be something that I have achieved during this time, because before starting it was very difficult for me
to find quotes or to find relevant information to use, and I can say that now it's a lot more simple.

Final reflection - Viva voce

Candidate comments:
Throughout this journey, I have developed abilities like organizing, researching, analysing, time management, and plenty of
more skills. This new abilities have helped me develop my EE and show how much I have learned through this time. One of
my main achievements has been finding a topic that illustrates what is my favourite knowledge area and adapt it in order to
fulfil the requirements of the DP. At first, I used the space for reflection to brainstorm all the topics I was interested in.
Afetrwards, I focused on taking notes about every website I found related to many aspects of my research question. To avoid
organizing problems I established one day per week to read and improve the EE without forgetting it. This experience will
help me to have an idea of making a research project in the future and include what subjects are more appealing to me. The
importance of this work is to make yourself aware of what you are capable of doing and also getting to know yourself and
what do you find more engaging.
