5 THINGS YOU SHOULD REMEMBER WHEN WORKING

IN CHEMISTRY LAB

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WR. WB.

The honorable all judges, committee, and all audience.

Today, in the very special day, we’re gather here even though still in the
middle of pandemic. All praise to ALLAH SWT. for always blessing us in
wherever we are. And salam to our prophet Muhammad SAW.

Before I begin, let me introduce my self first. I am FADHILLAH NURUL

AMALIA from Medical Laboratory Techonology, Health Polytechnic of
Jambi. I want to deliver about 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD REMEMBER
WHEN WORKING IN CHEMISTRY LAB.

As I told, I’m from medical laboratory technology and that means I spend
majority of my time working in laboratory, which is in this case, we’re gonna
talk about a chemistry lab. What is chemistry lab? Is it a place for research in
chemistry. What did i do in chemistry lab? Well, we do a experiment of
chemicals, and we also work with some various substances that might be
dangerous, flammable, or even has a possibility to make an explosion.

So, what are those 5 things?!

First, YOU HAVE TO DRESS PROPERLY. What kind of dress properly

we’re talking here? Well, it is a lab coat. What’s next? Gloves, made from a
rubber for protecting your hands from chemicals liquid. Mask, for protecting
your nose and your mouth. In some situation and condition, you may need a
goggles for protecting your eyes from chemicals spill. Don’t forget to wear
long sleeve, long pants/trousers, or long skirt. Then for shoes, make sure the
shoes covering your feet---it is all made for one and only your safety.

Second, KEEP A LABORATORY IN TIDY, CLEAN AND HYGIENE. It is

a part of you job to keep a lab in tidy, clean and hygiene. For example,
remember for always clean everytime you finish your work, you don’t want
any of disaster if you left unsafe matter of the table, right?

Third, KNOW THE SYMBOLS FOR YOUR SAFETY. What’s symbols

meaning here? There are plenty symbols, such as oxidizing, irritant,
dangerous for environment, corrosive, biohazard, and others. The question is,
why these symbols are significant? Let me take a simple case. In evey
chemicals bottles there’s a little tiny picture, for this case it shape like a
flaming fire, drew with a black liner, and you don’t know what’s that
symbols meaning. Accidentally, you put the thing into the fire, and then it
burns. Next things will come up to, your lab is in fire and everybody is freak
out, that’s all your fault because your don’t know the symbols. So, please,
precautions with every symbols and know how take care of it.

Fourth, HANDLE THE CHEMICALS SPILL. Whenever your working, the

chemical could be spill. It could be in the table, or glass, or your lab coat---,
or the worst, it could be splash to your eye. So how to handle it? You can use
a tissue or napkin for removing the spills. If somehow you don’t wear a
goggles, and it’s splashed to your eye, immediately rinse your eye and if any
complication happen you can check to the medical healthcare.

Then, the last of the list. Fifth, HOW TO HANDDLE WHEN EMERGENCY
HAPPENED. First kit aid should always be stocked in case of an emergency.
Clean and Sterilize any chemical that exposed to your skin. If somehow
you're not wearing any googles, imediately wash your eyes in running water.
Fire extinguisher also has to be accessable in case the fire occur accidently,
complete with the picture how to use it. Extra note: warning! If everything
seems out of control, you can call the people who responsible in laboratory
such as the lecturers, or seniors for helping.

In conclusion, if you following these 5 things, I can guarentee like 99,9%

you’ll be safe while working in laboratory.

I think that’s all. Thank you so much for your attention. Be safe and stay
safe!

WASSALAMUALAIKUM WR. WB.

Quote from me: stay golden, don’t worry, everything is gonna be alright,
you’ll find the way.
