OTIS ENGINEERING CORPORATION PACKER COMMODITY BULLETIN NO. 1 SUPERSEDES ENGINEERING BULLETIN NO. 184 PERMA-TRIEVE PACKERS PACKER COMMODITY BULLETIN NO. 1 COMMODITY: Packer June 15, 1969 SPECIFIC LINE: Perma-Trieve Packers SUBJECT: Obsolete and Current Design ASSEMBLIES: "PH", "PW" and "PR" Packers and Accessories 1. Definition and Introduction The Perma-Trieve packer is a retrievable single packer that has all the completion features of a permanent packer. The packer I. D. and tubing receptacle are identical with the "WA" and "WB" permanent packers; the Perma-Trieve packers use the basic "SB" or "JB" seal unit with the addition of an extension sub to lock the packer in the set position, The tubing string and seal unit may be released from the packer without un— locking and unseating the packer from the casing. Space out of tubing and completion techniques will be identical as those used with standard per- manent packers. The Perma-Trieve packer is rated at 6,500 P.S.1. differential pressure. Should occasion arise where higher differential pressures are anticipated, special high strength orheavy wall mandrels should be ordered, Packer accessories are available for the Perma-Trieve as follows: Expendable plug J-lateh Retrievable Plug ‘Tubing Adapter Kits . Back Pressure Valves . Standard Retrievable Sealing Plug Most of the above items are a modified version of the accessories used with the standard permanent packer The Perma-Trieve was designed so that the method of setting may be varied for a given requirement. This packer maybeset with an electric line in the same manner that a permanent packer is set. By changing 4 few parts on the top of the packer, the method of setting may be changed, = i.e., to tubing rotation set or to hydraulic pressure set. Conversion kits are manufactured for the purpose of converting a wire line set (type "PW") to a rotation set (type "PR"}and to a hydraulic set(type "PH"). ‘The packer may also be converted into an electric line set, retrievable bridge plug. All of the versions will be discussed later in these instructions. PAGE 2 PCB TL. Original Design Originally, the Perma-Trieve packer was manufactured in these sizes: 41/2", § 1/2" and 7", ‘This original design featured the following: 1. Sharp tooth type internal slips 2, Smooth ©. D. on packer mandrel 3. Flat springs for holding top slip against mandre! while running. ‘All dimensional data, packer assembly numbers, seal units and accessories for these packers are tabulated on Pagel2P.l also Engineering Pages 12PH.12 through 12PW,11, illustrate the assembly parts of these packers. All these packers were obsoleted for future man- ufacture. Of the original design, only types "PW" and "PH" are shown since ‘the original "PR" packer was not successful. Reference is made to Engineering Bulletin No. 166 dated April 21, 1966 which explains in detail the application and use of the accessories for this first version of the Perma-Trieve. MM, Revised Design In order to supply a tubing rotation Perma-Trieve packer, several changes in the original design were necessary. The type "PR" Perma- ‘Trieve now features the following: 1, Internal slips have a left hand, $~-pitch helical thread profile with a flat surface to replace the sharp edge. This flat surface is adjacent to the packer mandrel. 2. The packer mandrel has a special left hand, 8-thread buttress profile machined on the outside diameter. This profile will engage the thread of the internal slips when the packer is in the set position. 8, The drag springs were located on the drag spring body; therefore, a new shorter top slip carrier was designed. 4. A garter spring was used to hold the slips against the mandrel while running. In order to have interchangeability between the types "PW", "PH" and "PR", the "PW" and "PH" packers were redesigned as outlined for the "PR" Perma-Trieve. The "PH" and "PW" packers now have a new man- drel, new internal slips, a new top slip carrier anda garter spring. The "PW" has a new, longer wire line adapter and the "PH" has a new, longer cylinder and a piston spacer. All dimensional data, packer assembly numbers, seal units and ac~ cessories for this second version are tabulated on Engineering Page 12P.2 ; also, Engineering Pages 12PH..12 through 12PW. 11 illustrate the assembly parts of these packers. All seal units and packer accessories remained unchanged except that new conversion kits for the "PH" packer were necessary and now there are valid "PR" conversion kits which are new, PAGE 3 PCB I IV, Current Design ‘The Perma-Trieve packers are currently manufactured in the following casing sizes: 41/2", 5", 5 1/2", 65/8", 7", 75/8" and 9 5/8". This current design has the following features: 1, The flat, 8-pitch helical thread internal slips 2. Special buttress thread on mandrel O,D, for internal slip engagement. 3. Garter spring to hold top slips against mandret (All the above features were identical to these of the revised second design.). In addition, the bottom part of the current design incorporates a two piece bottom slip carrier as shown in the sketch below. ‘Item 3, the bottom slip carrier, is shear pinned to Item 6, the bolt housing, with pins (4). New, longer tie bolts, Item 2, were necessary since they now connect the bolt housing (6) to the slip mandrel (8) and span a greater distance. Shear pins (5) are placed behind the bolt head to main- tain the correct spacing between the slip carrier and slip mandrel. ‘During the setting operation, pins (5) shear, allowing the slips to slide along the tapered surface of the slip mandrel, When the slips engage the casing walls, pins (4) shear as the bolt housing (6) butts against the slip carrier (3). Further upward setting force sets the slips into the casing walls as the setting operation is completed. (Refer toOperating Instruction for further information on setting procedure.) ‘Tubing weight, (greater than the applied setting force or differential force) causing the packer mandrel to move downward, now cannot act to pull the bottom slips away from the casing walls. Retainer sub (7) has a thread, as shown, for attaching accessories to the bottom of the packers; this thread replaces the wire lock. All dimensional data, packer assembly numbers, seal units and accessories for this current version are tabulated on Engineering Pages 12P,3 also, Engineering Pages 12PH.2 through 12PW.5 illustrate the assembly parts of these packers and new accessories. PAGE 4 PceT V. Operation of the Perma-Trieve Production Packer A. Wire Line Set - Type "PW" (Refer to Schematic A, page 5 ) 1. The packer is attached to the electric wire line setting tool with the appropriate size adapter kit in much the same manner as @ stmdard permanent packer, as follows: 2. The tension sub (1) is pinned to the packer top sub with six 5, 000# mild steel shear pins. b. A support sub and extension (2), part of the adapter kit, are ‘used to lock the packer mandrel to the retainer sub. NOTE: The support sub location should always be checked after installation to make certain it is properly located across the collet. ¢. If an expendable plug is used, the support sub and extension ‘will not be necessaryand should be removed from the adapter kit. 2, The packer is lowered in the well to the desired depth and the setting tool actuated. As the setting tool strokes, the top slip carrier (3) is forced downward, expanding the top slips (4) over the collet wedge (5) into the casing walls. 3. At this point, the packer mandrel (6) is pulled upward, expanding the elements (7) between the element retainer and slip mandrel. At a pull of approximately 4,500#, pins (9) shear allowing the slips (8) to slide along the tapered surface of the slip mandrel (10). When the slips engage the casing walls, pins (11) fail at7,000# as the bolt housing (12) butts against the slip carrier (13). 4. At the completion of the setting stroke, the setting tool thrust is built up quickly to 30,000, at which time the tension sub (1) will shear from the packer top sub releasing the setting tool from the packer. 5. The setting tool and adapter kit may now be pulled clear from the packer. 6. Tocomplete the installation, the tubing, with seal unit, is lowered into the well until the packer is "tagged", Space cut the tubing with the proper length pup joints and insert the seal assembly into the packer bore. Tubing tension should be limited to the following values for safe conditions: 41/2" = 40,0008 BY = 40,0008 51/2" - 50,0008 65/8" - 60,0008 7 = 60, 000% 75/8" = 60,0008 95/8" = 60,000% ‘Tubing weight or compression should be limited to valves which will allow wire line work without difficulty. Various sizes and types of setting adapter kits for the "PW" Perma- Trieve are listed on Engineering Page 241PO. 1-2 revised and dated Oct. 15, 1968, which has been included, PAGE § PCB I SCHEMATIC A Bottom Slip Carrier B. Hydraulic Set - Type "PH" (Refer to Schematic B, page 8) qi The special "PH" ported seal unit (20) is inserted into the packer and locked in place by 1/3 of a turn to the left, The shear sub (21) is positioned over the seal unit and into the top sub and locked in place with three 5,000 mild steel pins. The shear sub is used as a safety device to prevent the packer from accidentally "jumping the 1'" during the trip in the hole. The packer is placed in the tubing string with the desired setting means below it, i.e,, a catcher sub or Otis landing nipple, and lowered to the proper depth, It must be certain that all collars, nipples, guides, efe., will pass through the packer bore. If the tubing string cannot be removed from the packer and well, the packer cannot be released. ‘With the packer at the proper depth, the setting ball is introduced into the tubing string and pumped to bottom. If a wireline re- trievable plug ia to be used, it should be seated in the proper landing nipple below the packer, With the setting ball or plug in place, fluid pressure may now be applied to the tubing string. This fluid pressure enters the set ting cylinder of the packer throagh the ports (22) in the seal unit and packer mandrel. As pressure is applied to the piston, pins (29) shear (at approximately 1,000 P.S.I,) allowing the piston (23), top slip carrier (24) and top slips (25) to move downward, The top slips are forced upon the tapered surface of the collet wedge and lock securely into the casing walls. Continued pumping of the fluld lifts the packer mandrel by acting against the lower face of the top sub (27). This upward movement expands the elements betweea the upper and lower element re~ tainer. At approximately 4, 500# of pull or ‘equivalent pump pressure, the pins (28) will fail, allowing the bottom slips to mave out and con- tact the casing walls. Pins (30) will shear as the bolt housing (31) butts against the slip carrier (82); this will occur again at*T, 000# or equivalent pump pressure. “Pressure varies with size of packer and piston area. NOTE: During the actual setting of this packer, it may be difficult to distinguish between the individual shearing of pins (28) and (30). As the tool becames completely set, the fluld pressure will start to increase, During the final setting, the pressure build-up should be staged to 2,000 P.S,I., 2,500 P.8.1, and 9,000 P.S.I, before the cateher sub fails at approximately 3,300 to 3,500 P.S.I, At each of these pressure plateaus, a waiting period of one to two minutes should be observed for allowing the rubber elements sufficient time to move under each load. If 8 wireline plug is used, the same setting procedure as out- lined above should be followed and a minimum of 2,000 P.S.1, pressure should be placed on the packer. Again, a waiting period af one to two minutes should be observed before releasing the pressure, PAGE 7 The shear sub (21) is not released from thepacker during the set- ting sequence. Therefore, it will require a tubing pull of 15,000 pounds above the pipe weight to release the seal assembly from the packer. This release need not be performed until it iadestred to remove the tubing string fram the well. Piston Area: aye - 5" S Say 65/n = ™ = 75/a" = s/n - Peet PAGE & Pct SCHEMATIC B ston Top Slip Carrier Top Slip AGE O Peer C, Tubing Manipulation Set (Refer to Schematic C, page 10) 1. The "PR" seal unit is latched into the bore of the packer and the shear sleeve is pinned in place in the same manner as was des- eribed for the hydraulic set packer. With the "J" latch mandrel, three mild steel shear pins should be used for locking the shear sleeve. All collars, nipples, guides, ete. , that are located on the seal unit below the packer must pass through the ‘packer bore; therefore, all O. D. of these items should be checked. If the tubing string cannot be removed from the well, the packer can- not be released. 2. While running the packer, caution should be exeroised to prevent right-hand rotation of the pipe and packer. 3. With the packer at the desired depth, the tubing 1s rotated to the right a minimum of 15 turns at the packer. This rotation releases the drag spring body, top slip carrier and top slip assembly (30) from the tubing receptacle (21) and leaves them suspended in the well casing by the drag springs. 4, ‘The tubing string 4s picked up which forces the top slip onto the tapered surface of the collet wedge and Into the casing walls. Continued upward movement of the packer mandrel expands the seal elements between the upper and lower element retainer. 5. At approximately 4,500# of pull the pins (33) will fail, allowing the bottom slips to move out and contact the casing walls. Pins (G4) will shoar as the bolt housing (25) butts against the slip car- Fier (96); this will occur at approximately 7,000# pull. NOTE: During the actual setting of this packer, it may be difficult to distinguish between the individual shearing of pins (83) and (84). 6. The tubing string should be pulled, in stages, to a minimum of 25, 000# above the pipe weight to thoroughly set the packer. If the seal unit was "unjayed" during the initial 15 turns of pipe rotation, it will pull free of the packer at 15,000 (the shear value of the three mild steel pins locking the sleeve to the top sub). In this event, the tubing shouldbe "'rejayed" into thepacker and the 25, 000% minimum tubing tension applied. NOTE: Ifa straight slot seal unit 1s used, a minimum of five mild steel pins should be used to lock the shear sleeve to the top sub of the packer. The shear value of the five pins is 25,0008. Before running a tubing rotation, Type "PR" Perma- ‘Trieve, the setting depth and tubing strength shouldbe ascer- tained to determine if the tubing 1s of sufficient strength to properly set the packer. PAGE 10 Pee SCHEMATIC C 30 ‘Top Slip Assembly 31 ‘Tubing Receptacle 32 | Slip Mandrel 33 34 Bolt Housing Slip Carrier 36, PAGE It PCBT D. Release Procedure for all Perma-Trieve Packers ~ w/Tubing String (Refer to Schematic D, page 12) 1. The tubing string is torqued te the right 1/3 of a tun to release the seal unit from the packer. The tubing string ts pulled from the well. 2, The "J" lateh mandrel with a mule shoe guide (41) is run back into the well for retrieving. The extension (40) and extra seal assembly should be removed from the seal unit, 8. The retrieving tool is latched into the packer lugs and tension ex- erted on the packer. A pull of about 10,000# snaps the collet and unlocks the mandrel go that {t will move upward relative to the remainder of the packer. If two 1287010 Screws (62) are used, an additional 10,000# are required to shear these in additon to “snapping” the collet. 4, As the mandrel moves up, snap ring (44) contacts the support ring (45), moving it from beneath the collet wedge (46). This action relieves the setting load on the top slips (47), allowing them to be lifted away from the collet wedge (46) when the support ring (45) butts against the heel af top slips (47). 5, Continued upward movement of the packer mandrel brings snap ring (48) against the inner shoulder of the slip mandrel (50) and pulls the slipmandrel away from the bottom slips (53), The packer is released and pulled from the well. E. Release Procedure for all Perma-Trieve Packers - w/Sand Line 1, Remove the seal unit from the packer as outlined in D, 1 above. 2, Usea"y" latch mandrel with a mule shoe guide (41)for the pulling tools; or as before, the extension (40) and extra seal assembly are not required. A wireline rope socket and crossover sub are needed to attach the retrieving tool to the sand line. In addition, ‘an Otis SB pulling tool should be used above the "J" latch mandrel. ‘The 41/2" and 5 1/2" Perma-Trieve Packers can be retrieved with tubular mechanical jars, while the 6 5/3", 7" and 7.5/8" packers require the use of hydraulic jars. The 9 5/8" packer should not be pulled with the sand line, The packer is released ‘as outlined in D, steps 3, # and 5 above. These slips are a mated set and should be installed in 2 numerical sequence in a clockwise direction, ‘This clockwise order would be oriented properly when facing the packer from the top end 4, Secure the internal slips by placing the spirolox ring (8) into the groove of the top slip carrier (9). 5. Stide the slip carrier (9) down the mandrel (10) approximately one inch past the four holes of the mandrel. (10) Parts (1), (2), (3) and(4) aremanufacturedas a unitandare stocked tubing set subassembly. Unscrew parts (1) and (2) and thor- ‘oughly grease the left-hand acme threads with Nebula EP-2 grease. 7. Pack the bore of drag spring body (2) with Nebula EP-2 grease in such a manner that Section A of the assembly will be filled with this grease. 8. Place the unit (1), (2), (3) and (4) over the mandrel (10) and tighten the threads of (1) and (10). 9. Secure the drag spring body (2) to the top slip carrier (9) with four socket head set screws (12). 10. Bolt the drag springs (6) to the top slip carrier (9) with four bolts ©). 11. Rotate the drag spring body (2) and slip carrier (9) unit several turns, checking to see if the internal slips (1) are free and not ‘engaging the mandrel (10). 12, Reposition the packer sothat the remaining parts oan be assembled onto the mandrel (10) from the bottom end. 18, Hook ends of spring (31), slid over mandrel and position springs over top slips (11) as shown. 14. Position snap ring (17) into groove of mandrel (10), 15, Place collet wedge (13) into element retainer (16) and snap into place: Position both pieces on mandrel so that the collet wedge slides over the tapered surface of the support ring (14). 16. Align holes in collet wedge (13) and support ring (14) with a 1/4" punch; drive pins (15) into holes of both pieces, Care should be ‘exercised to prevent sliding of collet wedge (13) and support ring (14) while driving pins. : PAGE 14 11, Place elements (18), (18) and (20) on mandrel, after applying Neb- "8 | ula EP-2 grease to mandrel O. D., element I. D. and element ends. 18. Place the slip mandrel (21), slip carrier (93}, and bolt housing (23) over the mandrel. With the slip carrier (33) butted against the slip mandrel (21), fit slips (22) into the "T" slot of the carrier and dove tail groove of the slip mandrel. 19. Separate the slip carrier (88) and the slip mandrel (21) so that slips (22) will not fall out of the "T" slot and dove tail groove. 20, Insert the tle bolts (24) through the holes in the belt housing (23) and slip carrier (33), Screw in nut (26) and place lock washer (25) over bolts. Start bolts (24) into slip mandrel (21). 21, Align the 43/16" holes in the bolt housing (23) with the holes in the slip carrier (33); drive in the four Steel pins (34). 22. Maintain dimension "A" and thread bolts (24) into the slip mandrel (21) until the bolts butt against the shoulder of the holes in the bolt housing (23). 23, Seoure this measurement "A" by tightening nut (26) andlock washer (25) against the slip mandrel (21). 24, Drive pins (27) Into the two holes of the bolt housing behind the bolts (26), so that dimension "A" will be maintained. 25. Slide snap ring (28) into groove of mandrel (10). NOTE: The 4 1/2" "PR" packer does not have @ separate ring (28). ‘The 41/2" packer has a retainer wire that should now be placed into the slot of slip mandrel (21) and driven around packer mandrel, 26, Place O-Ring (32) in retainer sub (29). Fit the retainer sub (28) over the mandrel and screw into the bolt housing. 27. Insert the shaft of the assembly tool into the packer bore from the top end. Screw the handle on the threads of the shaft so that the bearing will exert pressure against the retainer sub (29). Con- tinual rotation of the handle section will snap the collet of mandrel (10) into the recess of the retainer sub (29). Extract the assembly tool from the packer. 28. Install shear screws (30) in retainer sub (29) and mandrel (10). NOTE: Make sure bottom of shear screws are flush with mandrel I. D, and do not extend into mandrel bore. E, Twin-Flow Conversion Units ‘Twin-flow conversion units are available for the following size packers: Secondary Double Nominal Setting Bize Double "J"_"J"" Tubing Size __Adapter Kit 61/2" 121 3 12PT5504 2: x2 1/16 1. e = 12PT7004 12PTT005 12PTI006 2x2 241POT002 Refer to page12PT.3&4 which shows the twin-flow conversion unit for the Perma-Trieve packers and page 241P0,2 which illustrates the new adapter kit. 1. Remove the top sub weldment, normally supplied, from the packer and replace it with the longer weldment (11). The elongated top sub woldment (11) is included as a part of the twin-flow conversion unit. 2. Anew setting adapter kit with a longer sleeve (16) and a longer extension (18) are needed to set this packer on the Baker #20 setting tool. 3, The J-slot body (10) is a new part to the twin flow conversion unit and latches into the new top sub weldment (11). 4. The pup joint (4) and collet support sub (15) are of sufficient length to extend through the packer and lock the collet. The collet sup- port sub (15) has helical grooves for flow to the secondary tubing string. PAGE 23 PCB F, Packer Plugs (Bridge Plugs) Packer plugs to convert Perma-Trieve packers to bridge plugs are available as follows: Packer Packer Running Pulling Wire Line St Pi Tool Tool Adapter Kit ma Pry —TaPrssos TP Teno POT 12PT5000 12PTS502 12PTS501 None 5 832" 12PTS500 12PTS502 12PTSS01 «241 POS501 65/a"-7"-7 6/8" 12PT7000_—-12PT7002_—«12PTTO01__—_—241 POT001 Refer to page 12PT.1 for packer plug and overshot assembly. ‘The packer plugs are a newly designed lateh-type plug which jays into the top sub weldment of the packer. It can be run in place with the "PW" type Perma~Trieve packer only, at the present time, but can be run independently in all types Perma-Trieve pickers. When installed and jointly run with the "PW" type packers, a special setting adapter kit, listed above, is necessary to use with the Baker #20 setting tool. Overshot tools have been designed to permit independent running and pulling of the plugs. The packer plugs are designed such that the packer plug and packer can be retrieved jointly or the packer plug can be retrieved independently of the packer. Independent installation of packer plug (to run and land into a pre~ ‘Taeaty sak pack ‘The overshot part (16) of the running tool is fitted into the left- hand release J-slot on the plug latoh sub (1) and run on tubing or drill pipe to the packer depth. 2. The Jeslot body (9) jays into the packer latch pins. 3. Left-hand rotation and setting down of the pipe string releases the running tool so that it may be pulled and the plug left in the packer. 4, ‘Mandel (23) and locking sub (14) land under the collet and tock the packer in the set position. To retrieve the packer plug from the packer, the following pro- cedure is used. 5, By adding the shifting sleeve (18) and the drive look pins (17), the yuaning tool is now converted toa retrieving tool. 6, The overshot retrieving aasembly is run on pipe to depth and en- gages the latch sub (1). 7, The shifting sleeve (18) connects with the plug sleeve (3) and downward weight causes pin (4) to shear, allowing pressure to equalize through ports (*). &. ‘Right-hand rotation further engages the latch sub (1) and releases ‘the J-slot body (9) from the packer. 9. The plug may now be pulled from the packer by picking straight wp. To retrieve the packer plug and packer jointly, repeat steps, 5, 6 and 7 above and then do the following: 10, After pressure has equalized, a straight pick up of the tubing will shear wire (7). This wire will shear at approximately 18,000 pounds pull. 11, Mandrel (13) moves through the J-Slot body (9) until the locking sub (14) connects with the seal retainer (12). 12. Locking sub (14) has now moved from underneath the collet and unlocked the packer, 18. Further pick up of the pipe unseats the packer and both packer and plug may be pulled jointly. G.
