SAMPLE ANSWER

People often say that history is written by the winners. However, there
are ways of winning well and ways of losing badly, and it is this
aspect of history or defeat which is remembered over time. This essay
will argue that, although most people prefer to win at any cost, the
way one achieves triumph or meets with failure is what matters above
all else.

Reading a book of sporting statistics reveals only part of the story of

any sporting event. We take pride in the achievements of our
favourite teams, but should we accept their success at any cost? An
infamous example of winning poorly occurred almost 40 years ago,
when the Australian cricket captain told his bowler to do something
unsportsmanlike to beat New Zealand at the very end of the match.
Even though Australia won the game, it was New Zealand who
emerged moral victors, and the captain and bowler involved were
universally condemned.

There is also something to be said for accepting when one has been
beaten fair and square. Refusing to leave the field of battle at the
right moment will make you seem like a sore loser. When a child is
learning to play chess, it takes time for them to understand the rules
and master the game, during which time they will inevitably lose quite
often. In addition to improving their chess skills, understanding what it
means to lose and accepting defeat is a central part of the
experience.

This essay argued that there is a right and wrong way of winning and
losing. It is essential to acknowledge the superiority of the victor at
the same time as respecting the feelings of the vanquished.
