Project Summary
‘MSc Tourism Development and Culture' is a two-year master degree, delivered by The University of Glasgow
(UoG), Lund University (LU), The University of Malta (UM), and the University Institute Lisbon (IUL). Students
spend the first semester at UoG, the second at UM and the third at LU or IUL. In the fourth semester students will
concentrate on a dissertation. Students graduate with a 'joint' degree, earning one from each of the universities.
There will be opportunities for students to undertake a work placement, giving them some practical experiences
to complement their academic studies. The programme is structured so that students follow a trajectory enabling
a rational journey of understanding and specialisation. The first semester at UoG is an introduction to the subject
issues pertinent to the programme, a social science and history based understanding of tourism development as
well as cultural interpretation. In the second semester students attend UM where they are introduced to aspects
of cultural tourism including research methods, cities, niche cultural tourism, policy and marketing, giving insights
into cultural products and different cultural practices. The third semester may be at LU, where students are
introduced to tourism as an industry, encountering professional tourism and product development through
courses on sustainability in service organisations, value creation and innovation, and destination development. Or
it may be spent at IUL where students can study event management, urban tourism, e-tourism, hospitality
business design, wine and shopping tourism. All these add to their experience of industry products and issues.
The fourth semester allows the student to write a dissertation at one of the universities, concentrating on a
chosen topic of their interest. Disciplines include anthropology, business studies environmental science,
geography, history, international relations, management studies and sociology. Courses may be interdisciplinary
reflecting the multifaceted nature of tourism. The programme is holistic and international in its outlook. Students
gain an understanding of culture as 1) a concept and reality manifest through values, traditions and ideas,
determining behaviour and reactions to an extent; 2) a product that can be commodified, such as theatre, food,
dance and music. Students are encouraged to develop a critical and analytical approach to tourism, its impacts
and development, bearing in mind aspects of sustainability and ethics. In tandem, the business of tourism, its
relevance to growing economies and developing societies, and the operation of business are also addressed.
Students are welcome from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, and do not need prior knowledge of tourism
development and culture. It is relevant to people of all nationalities. They will be able to contribute to the vast
tourism and heritage industry at a managerial level in the public and private sectors, as well as in education.
