Athenaze Supplemental Readings for New

Testament students
By Seumas Macdonald (thepatrologist.com)

v.20220725

A brief introduction
This is an in-progress work to write a series of readings that complement and
expand the readings in the Athenaze Greek course, particularly by developing a
set of stories that (a) build upon the grammar and vocabulary in that course,
(b) have a setting that matches the New Testament world, (c) introduces and
makes students familiar with Koine, and particularly New Testament, language
and idiom.
New or unfamiliar expressions or idioms are marked in orange, with glosses
below. Particular idioms or syntactical features will also be explained as the
readings progress.
All feedback and corrections welcome. Email me at thepatrologist@gmail.com

Ιβ
πάντοτε – always (ἀεί) ἀκούει – hears, listens to
σήμερον – today διδάσκαλος – teacher
διὰ τί - why? λέγει – says
διότι– because ὅτι – that
τὸ σάββατον – the Sabbath εἷς – one
ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ - in the synagogue πιστεύει - believes
