Introduction to Banksy
● Banksy (Born in 1974, Bristol,England)is a pseudonymous street
artist known for his bold, distinctive graffiti work.
● His artwork includes elements of surrealism along with a heavy use
of irony, cleverness, wit and archness.
● His artwork mainly focuses on a single key idea.
● Banksy's artwork are simplistic yet effective, reducing complex
abstractions to something palatable.
BHARUCHA Zane Grade 11IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20
● Painted in 2004, this artwork depicts the effect of
Napalm #1 Napalm on people during the Vietnam War.
● Banksy's decision to place this girl beside
well-known children's figures is a message aimed at
highlighting our materialism and greed, which keeps
the American people unaware of the foreign policies
that influenced these images.
● The image also demonstrates how a purposefully
created culture of entertainment and commerce can
pacify a society.
Techniques used:
Colour contrast: The girl is depicted in a black and white
colour scheme emphasizing on the horror. Whereas, the
commercial icons are depicted in colour.
Symbolism: American culture represented as iconic
children’s figures.

Devolved Parliament#2 ● Painted in 2009, the piece is banksy’s largest

artwork yet. The painting is painted over a
14-feet-long canvas
● Here, chimpanzees replace politicians in the
house of commons
● By anthropomorphising politicians as apes, some
believe Banksy aims to show the chaos witnessed
during parliament
● The chimpanzees are however sitting neatly in
rows with no indication of wild behaviour. By
considering the most minute details of the room,
painting the windows in parliament black, and
lighting in the center, Banksy intends to show the
gravity of the situation
● Many believe the painting has relevant links to
modern-day politics, such as the chaos witnessed
in parliament during brexit
● The painting also makes use of
three-point-perspective to further demonstrate
the gravity of the situation

“Let them eat crack”
Banksy tends to take a satirical view on society’s problems - his artwork of a rat
saying “Let them eat crack” is a link to Marie Antoinette of the French monarchy
during the revolution when she says “Let them eat cake”, with the “them” being the
peasants and middle class. “Crack” here is a reference to crack cocaine, and
Banksy attempts to connect crack to food, and the rat to be of an important status.
Is an anti-drug statement that brings to light the ridiculous availability of drugs as a
result of capitalism
The conversation probably

The peasants: Your

highness, the peasant have
no bread

Marie: lol, let them eat cake

Depicts two soldiers, crouching on the ground and scouting
the landscape around them. One is holding a machine gun,
the other a paintbrush with which he is in the process of
painting a red peace sign. This sign originally symbolized
the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) of
1957 and is now widely known as an international symbol of
peace. The satirical juxtaposition of armed soldiers
alongside the iconic peace sign questions the role and
impact of military in keeping the peace. The peace sign,
painted in dripping red evokes the bloodshed of war. The
soldiers, who act on behalf of the government, are now
represented as activists and vandals, graffitiing the wall in
protest.

Brief look into who Banksy is and what his artworks mean:
KASHYAP Yash Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

History:

Banksy, a street artist whose true identity is unknown, is said to have been born about 1974 in Bristol, England. In the
late 1990s, he became known for his controversial stenciled works.

Banksy began his career as a graffiti artist with Bristol's DryBreadZ Crew in the early 1990s. Banksy utilized stencils on
occasionally, despite the fact that his early work was mostly freehand. He began mostly employing stencils in the late
1990s. As his unique style developed, his work became more well-known in Bristol and London.

What Is Banksy Known for?

Banksy's especially known for its startling pictures, which are sometimes mixed with phrases. His work frequently
addresses political issues, satirizing war, capitalism, hypocrisy, and greed. Rats, monkeys, cops, members of the royal
family, and youngsters are all common topics. Banksy is recognized for his installation art in addition to his
two-dimensional work. One of the most well-known of these works, a real elephant painted in a Victorian wallpaper
design, aroused outrage among animal rights groups.
Artwork 1 Analysis: Boy with Machine Gun
KASHYAP Yash Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

This artwork shows a young child holding a machine gun,

whose bullets appear to be crayons. Around him are
“chalk” drawings of flowers that are supposed to imitate
drawings done by children.

The boy is done in a high-contrast monotone style, akin to

chiaroscuro in art. This juxtaposes the brightly colored
crayons and flowers so both elements stand out. His face
looks uncertain and afraid to hold the gun.

There is a large juxtaposition between the bright color

next to him and his dull figure, in a way showing what a
child should be doing (having fun, drawing fun images,
etc) against what the child is doing (fighting with guns).

This best follows “Beliefs, Values, and Education” as it

shows how the child’s values have been corrupted as
they are now being forced to fight in a war.

and suit holding a jagged arrow, using it as a whip. This
arrow represents stock prices, continuously growing
higher and higher.

He is chasing after a group of people on barren land, of

various ages. 3 of these are kids, 2 of them are a mother
and her baby, 2 of them are construction workers, and
one is an old man with his dog. These are all
stereotypically “weaker” individuals and the man is
pushing them out of the land.

This artwork best follows Politics, Power, and Justice as it

shows the difference in power between the two parties
here. The man has power over them and he seems to be
abusing it to get his way.

Banksy Work Analysis

1. Let them eat crack
MALHOTRA Rhea Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

This art is based in Soho, New York

● The rat represents street artists;
Banksy believes that street artists
stay hidden and only come out in
the dark, as do rats as well as
remaining extremely alert like rats
do as what they are doing is illegal.
(Symbolism)
● Banksy derived this phrase
supposedly form a famous one: “
Let them eat Cake”, crack was
replaced with cake in order to
address the problem of drug use
(Dominant text)
● The use of crack is very common in
poor; low income areas in the
United states especially by
unemployed people. It is the
cheapest drug sold.
Link to global issue - Politics, power and justice
MALHOTRA Rhea Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

The overall message is of inequality between classes; Banksy as an individual and

artist is appalled by the idea of capitalism. He tries to convey that drugs are easily
accessible and heavily used by those whom are not highly paid; or have a good
quality of life. Especially seen during the Wall street financial crisis in 2008 and
how banks/businessmen lead to this crisis that impacted the whole city.

Politics power and justice - It shows how power is distributed based off of income
and wealth in capitalist society portrayed by the businessman in the painting. Many
wealthy investors were making money during the recession.
MALHOTRA Rhea Grade 11 One nation under CCTV
IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

● Banksy is trying to provide

emphasis on what he believes
is unethical, the government
restricting privacy and taking
advantage of their power to
closely monitor citizens. This
artwork was later taken down by
the city council in London.
● Irony - The piece was made
right behind a surveillance
camera. A little boy whom is
painting the words, is being
watched by a policeman and a
dog as CCTV does.
● Textography - Large, bold text
to attract attention from the
community.
Links to global issue - Politics, power and justice
MALHOTRA Rhea Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

- As mentioned, the art is conveying a message about how

governments are monitoring our very move closely. It goes to
show how they are taking advantage of their authority position
as well as restricting citizens from their freedom. The irony is
used to depict the reality - that CCTV is all around us and aims
to show the significance of the issue to the community.

How does Banksy convey anti-consumerism sentiments through his works?

MEHTA Devanshi Dipen Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

Show me the
Monet
This work by Banksy re-figures
the iconic Impressionist painting
Bridge Over a Pond of Waterlilies
(1899) by Claude Monet. Monet's
original reveals a tranquil scene
of his own garden, with rich
vegetation reflected in the calm
water. Banksy has replicated
Monet's original painting almost
exactly, using the same materials
as Monet, however Banksy has
added two discarded shopping
carts and a traffic cone to the
pond.
MEHTA Devanshi Dipen Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20

Analysis

● It presents a dialogue on the impact of the corporate world on our environment and the sacrifices
made at the expense of so-called ‘human progress’.
● By using shopping carts, an image associated with consumerism, Banksy’s message is that society is
focused on material goods, buying more than is necessary in a futile attempt to make itself feel
happy and fulfill.
● representing these man-made objects as discarded in an otherwise beautiful setting, he critiques
contemporary society's disregard for nature in favor of commodity fetishism and the production of
excessive waste.

Analysis

● It has a universal audience and the it is composed of the girl being black and white and the only
source of color of McDonald and Mickey Mouse in yellow. The yellow could also allude to napalm
itself.
● Banksy depicts Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald holding the hands of a terrified, naked girl
which makes a statement that aims to highlight consumerism and greed that keeps the American
people oblivious of the foreign policies that made these pictures possible.
● Alludes to the American nation being blinded by possessions and material greed to the more
pressing concerns such as the foreign policies and war conduct.
● The image stresses the commercialisation of war itself, how the military has become a multi-billion
dollar industry with powerful corporate lobbies.

Artwork #1: Global Issue Connection

- Beliefs, Values and Education

The belief of following your dreams is a naive idea pushed forward by

governments to create unrealistic ideal standards to manipulate American
citizens, going against basic moral values. Also suggests how levels of
education play an impact on the possibility of being able to find a job that you
actually enjoy versus being forced to something for the sake of earning a living.

About Banksy
Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist who is considered to be from Bristol,
England due to his original artwork being from there. His work highlights several
polarizing political views in simplistic, understandable artworks around the world.

Presents people with puzzles that must be solved in order to get a glimpse into his

How the innocence of children is corrupted by war

During war, children end up having to learn about weapons and how to use them
in order to survive. Due to this, their innocence is ruined as they’re likely to view
the world with a bleaker perspective.
SHEIKH Arsh Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 22Mar22 09:20
Bomb hugger

The use of juxtaposition is evident in this artwork. The

innocent girl is “hugging” the bomb lovingly, as if it just
another toy, symbolizing how she is unaware about the
gruesome consequences the bomb could have on her life. he
purpose of this poster is to symbolise the horrors of the war
juxtaposed with the innocence of the young girl.

This links to the global issue as the girl’s emotions are being
conditioned and corrupted by the situation of war to love
warfare and as she will soon realise how the bomb has
impacted her, she will be stripped off her innocence.

Child soldier
This poster shows a child dressed up as a soldier while holding a large machine
gun, highlighting how the innocence of children is being corrupted with weapons.

The use of colour portrays the difference in the child’s soul due to the direct
effect of the war.

When looking at the bright colours of the flowers and sun in comparison to the
black-and-white image of the child and the gun, it shows how the child should
have an optimistic outlook on life and full of happiness in comparison to the
darkness due to the enduring horrors of the war. Another technique is the larger
proportion of the gun’s size in comparison to the child. It represents how the child
is not old enough to handle such a gun and symbolizes how the child is too
innocent to be handling warfare in general.

This artwork links to the global issue as the child’s innocent view on life,
highlighted by the use of “drawings” of flowers and the sun, is being heavily
outweighed by the sheer magnitude of warfare, which is represented by the size
of the gun.
