The Effectiveness of Livelihood Program Among Person’s Deprived

of Liberty

Every individual inmate serving their time within a jail

facility is not just possessed of their negative habits/sides;

some are skilled in their specialized sector when they are not

guilty of a crime, and some are professionals. As a result, the

prison institution has taken steps to provide PDL’s with the

opportunity to evaluate/share their occupations while also

keeping their minds active and rehabilitating them on a daily

basis.

The livelihood program tends to help the PDL in terms of

sustaining their needs by helping the institution based on their

field of work/profession. The livelihood program presents income-

generating activities to PDL during their confinement where they

are able to earn for their personal upkeep and for financial

support to their families. The capital for the livelihood

project is either from BJMP for BJMP-funded projects or from the

common fund of a group of PDL for non-BJMP funded projects.

Examples of continuing and most popular livelihood projects of

PDL are bags and purses, bonsai made of beads, pastries, rugs,

paper crafts, and wood crafts. To help the PDL earn from these

livelihood projects, the jail unit Welfare and Development

Officer (UWDO) facilitates the sale of the products in display

centers or livelihood caravans organized by the local government

units and other service providers. In addition, online or e-

marketing of PDL products is also run by the jail unit Welfare

and Development Office.

The objective of livelihood programs is to train the inmate’s

livelihood skills, provide services and improve the moral
spiritual aspects of their life. This can be attained by
providing them seminars and trainings regarding livelihood
skills. The livelihood initiative seeks to increase environmental
awareness, create work opportunities for convicts, and minimize
trash in the province. The goal of the prisoner’s labor program
is to keep the convicts busy, provide them with money for
personal costs and their families, and assist them in acquiring
livelihood skills so that they may become productive citizens
once released and absorbed back into society. As a result of the
livelihood program, convicts become more responsible and
productive members of society. They are able to assist their
family who are outside the jail. Their earnings also provide a
source of funds for personal goods such as soap, shampoo, and the
like.
To properly fulfill their obligations and duties towards their
clientele, including but not limited to the person deprived of
liberty and the community, the Butuan City Jail Male Dorm's
responsibilities and issues with the implementation of the
Therapeutic Community Modality Program among people deprived of
liberty due to drug abuse cases should be presented and
addressed.

Conclusion

Therapeutic Community Modality Programs are indeed a very helpful

program to every inmate or Person Deprived of Liberty (PDL)
specifically the Livelihood program for it showcase their talents
and to bring back their passion. It also helps their family to
have a financial support even though the compensation is not
minimum wage but little by little, it can help their family.
