Early in 1649 Thomas Simon was granted a commission to engrave
stamped in imitation of engraving, bust three-quarters left, the Great Seal of the Commonwealth, but because Parliament were
reverse arms and supporters, 55 x 46mm, 18.76gm (MI in a great hurry to have the Seal Simon was given less than a month
to complete it (Allen, BNJ 1940, p.440: Nathanson p.19). This first

hasty effort was replaced in 1651 with another Seal of the same
Richard Sackville (1589-1624), Baron of Buekhursl and 3rd Earl of design, but executed with much greater care. The 1651 Seal is a
Dorset. The original medal by de Passe, in the British Museum, is magnificently crafted work, full of fine detail: the best known
believed to be unique illustration of it was first published by Vertue in 1753 from a wax
impression, then in the collection of Margaret Cavendish, Dowager
Duchess of Portland; her collections of coins, medals and gems were
dispersed post mortem in two auctions in 1786. The Simon archive
included a pen and brown ink design for the 1649 Seal (Christie's 14
July 1987, lot 17), but no sketch of the completed design for the 1651
Seal is believed extant

The Eisteddfod is Wales’s foremost cultural event, celebrating
poetry, singing and other arts. Welsh eisteddfodau have a very
ancient history, supposedly dating from pre-Roman times. It can be
traced with certainty to an event at Cardigan castle in 1176 and was
an established tradition by the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
Thereafter it declined but was revived towards the late 18th century
by emergent London Welsh learned societies and Edward Williams
(known as lolo Morganwg). From 1881 the eisteddfod has been more

Selwyn Francis Edge was a pioneer motorist and propagandist of the


motor car In the early 1890s Edge formed a friendship with cyclist
Montagu Napier, grandson of the founder of D. Napier & Son. When
Napier decided to build cars bearing his own name he and Edge
founded S.F. Edge Ltd in 1900 to build them. Edge competed in
several of the major European town-to-town races in 1901 and 1902,
driving one of his Lambeth-built Napiers. In a 35hp Napier he won
the Gordon-Bennett Cup race in 1902, from Paris to Innsbruck - the
first important win for a British car in international competition.
Later Edge turned his attention to motor boat racing and in 1903 his

unsigned, issued by Arthus-Bertrand, trophy fashioned in Cork Harbour. Edge retained a close interest in Brooklands Track,
the speedbowl near Weybridge constructed in 1907. Just prior to the
Art Deco style, C IIAI t.F.NGl MAURICE RAPHAEL on base, official opening. Edge completed a 24-hour run. during which he
reverse cross over image of monoplane, wreath of flowers covered 1.581 miles, at an average speed just short of 66mph. This
around, 50mm. About very fine (£15-20) effort set new world land speed and distance records that remained
unbeaten for over 20 years.

Hans von Sccckt (1866-1936), German general, rebuilt the German


army after World War I, in which he had led troops in Poland,
Turkey and the Balkans. As Reichswchrminister from 1920 to 1926.
he established an effective fighting force, partly by violating terms of
the Treaty of Versailles. He secretly trained officers beyond their
official responsibilities and established illegal military groups outside
