New Priming Pump for Certain Generator Sets (BFPM) February 2015

This engine news article applies to 1100 Series three and four cylinder engines, models DC, DD, DJ, DK, RE,
RG, RR, RS XK, XL, XM, NK and NL that are installed to certain generator sets before the engine serial
numbers that are listed in table 1.

A B
A new fuel priming pump (A1) has been introduced. The new fuel priming pump is a Brushless Motored Fuel
Pump (BFPM). The new fuel priming pump replaces the existing fuel priming pump (Perkins part number
3583A053) (B1).
Note: The secondary fuel filter element has not changed.
For four cylinder engines, fuel priming pump conversion kit (Perkins kit number U5MK8291) is available.
If the existing fuel priming pump (Perkins part number 3583A053) is to be replaced on three cylinder engines,
fuel priming pump conversion kit (Perkins kit number U5MK8292) is available.

If primary fuel filter (C1) is already installed, it must be replaced with primary fuel filter (D1). The BFPM has an
increased flow rate and needs the change of primary filter.
Note: Certain applications must have a different type of primary fuel filter installed. Refer to the Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for more information.
If existing fuel priming pump (Perkins part number 3583A053) requires internal inspection, follow step 1
through to step 6. Refer to illustration (K) for the flow chart that should be followed to assist in diagnosis.

E
1 Use a suitable tool to cut through the housing (E1) for the fuel priming pump, approximately 5 mm (0.2 inch)
from each end.

2 Remove the inlet end (F4) from the housing (F1) for the fuel priming pump. Remove the inlet screen (F3)
and seal (F2) from the fuel priming pump.
3 Inspect the inlet screen (F3) for contamination. If the inlet screen is restricted, this indicates that the fuel
priming pump has been operated with contaminated fuel.

4 Remove the motor (G1) and pump assembly (G2) from the inlet end of the housing.

5 Inspect the pump screw vanes (H1) and (H2) for the presence of gums or resins. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, ‘Fluid Recommendations (Fuel Recommendations)’ for more information. Ensure that
the pump screw vanes are clean and free from dirt and debris. Ensure that the pump screw vanes are free to
rotate. Ensure that the pump screw vanes (J2) can be removed from the screw vane housing (J1).
6 If the pump screw vanes are restricted, this confirms the presence of gums or resins. This indicates that the
fuel priming pump has been operated on fuel that does not meet the correct specification or that the engine
has not been correctly maintained. For more information on the correct fuel specification and maintaining the
engine, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
