Sudden hearing loss is a disease in which hearing deteriorates rapidly within a few hours or 2-3
days. It usually occurs in one ear and in severe cases can lead to complete hearing loss, but many
people are not aware of it.

Common hearing loss occurs after prolonged exposure to loud noises. However, sudden hearing loss
is characterized by a sudden loss of hearing even when not exposed to loud noises. The professional
definition is 'a sensorineural hearing loss corresponding to 30 dB (decibel) or more at 3 or more
consecutive frequencies within 3 days' in pure tone audiometry. It is usually accompanied by tinnitus
or dizziness, and if left unattended, hearing may be completely lost and even hearing aids may not
be used. It occurs most often in people in their 30s and 50s, and the incidence rate in Korea is known
to be 20 to 50 per 100,000 people, but there are reports that the actual incidence rate will be much
higher than this.

In most cases, sudden hearing loss does not have a clear cause. This is because the response to
treatment and the prognosis vary. In general, it is considered that the main cause is a viral infection
in the auditory nerve or a disturbance in blood flow. Others include cochlear membrane rupture,
autoimmune inner ear disease, neurological disease, and auditory nerve tumor.

Sudden hearing loss causes partial hearing loss, such as low or high pitched sounds. Familiar sounds
sound strange and sometimes not sound. It may be accompanied by tinnitus, a feeling of something
in the ear, and dizziness.

Sudden hearing loss may improve spontaneously over time after onset. About one-third of all
sudden hearing loss shows a rapid hearing recovery. However, if the degree of hearing loss is severe,
if left unattended for a long time, or if accompanying symptoms such as dizziness persist, it is
difficult to recover from the state before the onset.

Sudden hearing loss requires regular visits to the otolaryngology department for detailed tests such
as pure tone hearing test and speech threshold test. In particular, people who have had poor hearing
before the onset of sudden hearing loss are difficult to perceive hearing loss, so they must receive
regular check-ups, including hearing tests. People in their 40s and 50s, who are at high risk of
sudden hearing loss, check their hearing for each frequency in advance and save the number as a
photo to help them take immediate action in case of sudden hearing loss.

Early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment are important in the treatment of sudden
hearing loss. Among them, early detection is the most important. However, there is a problem that
depends on the subjective feeling of the patient. For example, if sudden tinnitus and hearing loss
occur at the same time, you may miss the golden time of treatment if you do not feel the symptoms
of hearing loss and mistake it for a simple tinnitus. In some cases, a sudden hearing loss in one ear is
mistaken for deafness and left unattended for a long period of time. In particular, when sudden
hearing loss occurs in the elderly or children who have difficulty expressing symptoms, early
detection becomes more difficult.

Administration of high-concentration steroid hormones is very important for the treatment of

sudden hearing loss. It is a method of administering steroids directly into the eardrum while
monitoring hearing changes by performing periodic hearing tests during the treatment process.

The degree of recovery of hearing differs greatly depending on the start time of treatment and the
level of initial hearing loss. Professor Kim Young-ho of the Department of Otolaryngology and
Throatology at Seoul Boramae Hospital said, “Sudden hearing loss is an emergency disease that
starts suddenly and can cause permanent damage. ” he advised.
