All: With all that we are, we will praise God’s holy name!
One: With all our hearts, let us bless the Lord.
All: We will never forget how kind God has been.
One: The Lord forgives our sins, heals our weakness, and gives us life everlasting.
All: Let us worship God who is merciful and patient, God’s love never fails.
*Hymn
Holy Ground
We are standing on holy ground,
and I know that there are angels all around;
let us praise Jesus now;
we are standing in his presence on holy ground. x2

Prayer of Confession
O God, our judge and our hope, we confess we often turn away from your truth, and
ignore your call to do justice. Forgive us when we say one thing in worship but do
another in the ways we live. Forgive us when we ignore how others are treated and
think only of ourselves. Let your judgment awaken us and your mercy refresh us.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon
One: The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Believe the good news of the Gospel. In Christ, God has offered us mercy and love.
Receive God’s forgiveness this day and share it with each other for Christ’s sake.
All: Thanks be to God!
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Hymn
Bless The Lord, O My Soul

Bless the Lord, O my soul;

bless the Lord, O my soul;
and all that is within me bless his holy name. x2

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Psalms
Psalm 103:1-8
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the Lord, O
my soul, and do not forget all his benefits— 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your
diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The Lord works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known his
ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. 8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to
anger and abounding in steadfast love.

Reading from the Epistles

Hebrews 12:18-29
You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom,
and a tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers
beg that not another word be spoken to them. 20 (For they could not endure the order that
was given, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death.” 21 Indeed,
so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”) 22 But you have come to
Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable
angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven,
and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus,
3
the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the
blood of Abel. 25 See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape
when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we
reject the one who warns from heaven! 26 At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he
has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.” 27 This
phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what is shaken—that is, created things—
so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom
that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship
with reverence and awe; 29 for indeed our God is a consuming fire.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (Heb 12:18-29). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Reading from the Gospel

Luke 13:10-17
Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And just then there
appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over
and was quite unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and
said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” 13 When he laid his hands on her,
immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. 14 But the leader of the
synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd,
“There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and
not on the sabbath day.” 15 But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites! Does not
each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to
give it water? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for
eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?” 17 When he said
this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the
wonderful things that he was doing.

Sermon Rev. John Scott
“Bless the Lord, O My Soul”
RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his
only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe
in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of
sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Invitation to Giving
Doxology

Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication
Family Choir
O How He Loves You and Me
O how he loves you and me;
O how he loves you and me.
He gave his life, what more could he give?
O how he loves you,
O how he loves me,
O how he loves you and me!

Jesus to Calvary did go,

his love for people to show.
What he did there brought hope from despair.
O how he loves you,
O how he loves me,
O how he loves you and me!

The Lord’s Prayer

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Let Us Build a House

Let us build a house where love can dwell

and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell
how hearts learn to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions,
rock of faith and vault of grace;
here the love of Christ shall end divisions:
all are welcome; all are welcome;
all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak,

and words are strong and true,
where all God's children dare to seek
to dream God's reign anew.
Here the cross shall stand as witness
and as symbol of God's grace;
here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:
all are welcome; all are welcome;
all are welcome in this place.

6
Let us build a house where love is found
in water, wine, and wheat;
a banquet hall on holy ground
where peace and justice meet.
Here the love of God, through Jesus,
is revealed in time and space;
as we share in Christ the feast that frees us:
all are welcome; all are welcome;
all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where hands will reach

beyond the wood and stone
to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,
and live the Word they've known.
Here the outcast and the stranger
bear the image of God's face;
let us bring an end to fear and danger:
all are welcome; all are welcome;
all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where all are named,

their songs and visions heard
and loved and treasured, taught and claimed
as words within the Word.
Built of tears and cries and laughter,
prayers of faith and songs of grace;
let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:
all are welcome; all are welcome;
all are welcome in this place.

Benediction

August 2022 Finance Update
Currently we are staying about as budgeted at a loss of $59,658 year
to date. Giving contributions are about 14% above budget. Our electric
costs for Don Airey Hall and the office building and classrooms are
soaring and well above budget. Of course, our very hot weather is a
major factor. We determined the main air conditioning units supporting
these buildings required servicing to improve their efficiency. One of the
units serving the kitchen will potentially require $7,500 replacement to
restore it to service. Overall, the repairs to these units will reduce our
electricity costs. Would you consider assisting with increased giving to
help support our need to offset the higher than budgeted expense and
replacement of the inoperable air conditioner unit. Thank you.
