What I Need to Know
This module was written and designed to make learning easier especially
as we are in the “new normal” situation. As an educational tool, this
module about the (Personal Health – Issues and Concerns):
Height/Weight and Hearing challenges you as a learner, to become creative,
resourceful and independent. The scope of the module provides a variety of activities
that will stimulate independent and self-guided learning experience. Lessons in this
module are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course to ensure effective
learning continuity, make the experience more meaningful, effective and relevant to life
situations.

This module includes lessons and activities on:

Nothing is permanent in this world except change and so are you. And as you are getting
into your puberty, you will have to consider many thing specially changes in your body.
You will experience physical, social as well as emotional and intellectual change. Don’t
worry, all is part of your growing up! But if you fail to cope with the different changes
during the puberty stage, different health-issues and concerns may arise.

What’s In

You are familiar with personal health. There are many things to consider about personal
health issues and concerns. People change not only physically but in the same way, the
social concerns grow up too. Then you should be able to handle it properly. Before going
to the next topic, answer honestly your activity below.

What is It

PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CONCERNS

Personal Health is the ability to take charge of your health by making conscious
decisions to be healthy. It not only refers to the physical well-being of an individual, it
is important to be mindful of the choices you make for your personal health and well-
being.
The first on our list are the issues and concerns about Height and Weight. Sometimes
you have questions like “my parents were both tall but why am I short?” or “Why am I
not as slim as my friend?”
There are several factors you need to consider when it comes to height and weight.

These factors are as follows:

A. HEIGHT and WEIGHT

1. STUNTED GROWTH - reduced normal growth rate


2. UNDERWEIGHT - below a considered normal or desirable weight
3. OBESITY - is a medical condition that occurs when a person carries excess
weight or body fat that might affect their health.
4. OVERWEIGHT - above a normal or permitted weight
5. FAMILIAL - short/tall parents have a tendency to bear children who are short
/ tall.
6. ILLNESSES-ailments experienced during infancy may cause growth problem.
7. HORMONAL- a problem affected by the pituary gland that cannot produce
growth hormone.
8. CONGENIAL - affected by Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), a condition
in which a baby does not grow at a normal rate inside the womb.
9. HIGH WEIGHT FOR HEIGHT - there is a high consumption of fatty acid and
sugar food.
10. LOW HEIGHT-FOR AGE- failure to reach one’s growth potential due to health
problems and poor nutrition.
11. LOW WEIGHT- FOR HEIGHT - extreme thinness associated with acute
starvation, severe disease, or chronic unfavorable condition.

B. HEARING RELATED PROBLEMS

 CERUMEN IMPACTION - refers to the build up of layers of earwax within the


ear canal to the point of blocking the canal and putting pressure to the
eardrum and often caused by misguided attempts to remove earwax.

 SWIMMERS EAR(External Otitis) - caused by water trapped in the inner ear


area.

 Otitis Media - an infection in the middle ear.
