purpose: People credited with this unit standard are able to describe
upper reinforcement method's and reinforce uppers by both
fusing and attaching linings and interlinings to footwear
uppers to specified industry performance and company
quality standards. This unit standard is for those working in
the trade as a production operative.

entry information: Open.

accreditation option: Evaluation of documentation by NZQA and industry.

moderation option: A centrally established and directed national moderation


system has been set up by the Apparel and Textile Industry
Training Organisation.

special notes: Specified industry performance is 55% BSI performance or


equivalent. BSI Performance is the British Standards
Institute internationally recognised performance system
(BS3138) where 100% is the standard expected from a
competent fully qualified performer using the correct
methods and taking the allowed rest, working briskly and as
though on an incentive. Other comparable rating or
performance systems such as the 60/80 system are
acceptable, with the appropriate performance adjustment.

Company safety requirements conform to the Health and


Safety in Employment Act 1992.

1.1 Reasons for lining and interlining uppers are explained.

Range: strength, shape retention, comfort, appearance, production


process requirements, water repellent.

1.2 Methods of backing and/or lining and interlining uppers are identified and
described in relation to function and operation.

Range: hand iron, heat press, hand applied, machine applied.

1.3 Materials used for linings and interlinings are identified.

Range: raised fabric, woven, non-woven, knitted, fabric and foam


combination.

Reinforce footwear uppers by fusing linings and/or interlinings.

2.1 Equipment is adjusted to product specifications.

Range: time dwell, temperature, pressure.

2.2 Linings and/or interlinings are attached by fusing press or hand iron according
to product specifications.

2.3 Work is completed to company quality standards.

2.4 Work is completed to specified industry performance standards.

Reinforce uppers by attaching linings and/or interlinings using liquid adhesive.

Range: neoprene, polyurethane, latex, PVA, rubber solution.

3.2 Equipment is selected to company requirements and practice.

Range: hand brush, machine applicator, spray.

3.3 Adhesive is applied to company quality standards.

Range: thickness, evenness, not over edge.

3.4 Work is completed to specified industry performance standards.

3.5 Documentation is completed according to company requirements and practice.

3.6 Work practices meet company safety requirements.

3.7 Material utilisation is consistent with company requirements and practice.

3.8 Waste is disposed of according to company requirements and practice.

Attach linings and interlinings

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before


they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit


standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for providers wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
