(Common to CE, CEE)
TU
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 75

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B.

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A.
Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
H
Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART- A

2.a) Deduce the formula for the elongation of a prismatic bar under the action its own weight.
b) A bar 3m long and 5cm diameter, hangs vertically and has a collar securely attached to
9A
the lower end. Find the maximum stress induced when,
i) A weight of 250Kg falls 12.8 cm on to the collar.
ii) A weight of 2500Kg falls 1.28 cm on to the collar. Take E= 2×106Kg/cm2. [4+6]

3. A rigid bar is supported by three rods the outer one of steel and the central one of copper.
The cross-sectional area of each steel rod is 300mm2 and the copper rod is 1000 mm2.The
three rods are equally spaced and the loads of 50KN are each applied mid-way between
the rods. Determine the forces in each of the vertical ars if the rigid bar remains
horizontal after the loads have been applied. Neglect the weight of the rigid bar.
Take Esteel=205KN/ mm2 and Ecopper=110KN/ mm2. [10]
