CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 What is the estimation?

It is an estimation art that engineers use to estimate the amount and price of building
materials, and because of the guess can estimate how long we can finish building, and it
is usually before the start of construction and because of it the owner knows the cost
and the time period from the completion of the construction because without
knowledge the cost is complete For construction it will be a risk to the owner and the
guesswork deals with these problems and gives us a simple idea of the work we do..

The eighteenth century is the century that dates back to the history of guessing when
British surveyors found it. Then, during the first half of the twentieth century, other
techniques developed to estimate building materials more and used six methods for
estimating in this century, and are the same methods that engineers use to Estimation
and make a difference only. In prototyping the initial cost.

1.2 Types of estimation

Estimation can be divided into two parts:

1.2.1- Approximate Estimation: It is the Estimation of all the building departments based
on the m^2 or m^3 of the construction. This estimate is placed roughly, and we make this
estimate in order for the project owner to know the cost before making a decision to
construct it.

1.2.2- Detailed estimation: This estimation is carried out by contractors before the
important projects to provide the cheapest bids. In this type of estimation estimating
each part separately after knowing the prices of materials, equipment and work fees.

1
University of Sulaimani PREPARATION OF B.O.Q FOR THREE-STORY BUILDING

A-unit quantity: Each item is made separately Measuring its quality and cost, then adding
it.

B-total quantity: We calculate quantities for each type and category of materials and
multiply them according to the cost per unit of material, and also the cost and profit of
the building.

1.3 Objectives of the study

Putting the finishing touches on bids and controlling costs is served by the estimation
and the cost, and also because of the estimation we can control the costs and study the
options the materials we explore during construction. and estimating of concrete
consists of (lean concrete , and concrete of footing, partition wall , beams, tie beams,
columns, lintels, slabs and stairs ) and estimating of steel consists of ( steel of footing,
beams, columns, slabs and stairs ) then estimating masonry contain ( walls and
partitions ), next estimating finishing and external finishing.

1.4 Aim

This project provide introduction to the principle of construction management with the
focus primarily on cost estimation aspects that govern the effective and timely delivery
of project. In order to further understanding of the above mentioned this case is studied.

And to:

a. Reading and understanding construction drawings.

b. Measurement of quantities

c. Cost estimation

d. Change order

LITERATURE REVIEW
For the final project which has to be submitted as a requirement for our bachelor degree,
we selected the (Estimation of three story building) project which was proposed by one of
our lectures. Although, many projects have been done on the same subject, but for
different types of buildings, in the past few years by the students of Civil Engineering
Department, we will estimate the martial quantities for a reinforced concrete three story
building. One of projects which has been done in 2019 by Iman Bast , Asht , and Lana,
under the supervision of (Dr.Mahdi Osman ) was project of estimation of commercial
building , they have used detailed method of estimation for measuring of the total
material quantities.

Another, project which has been done in 2018 by Tesho and their group, under the
supervision of ( Mr.Shuaaib A Mohammed ),, was project of quantity and cost estimation
of building, they have used detailed method of estimation for measuring of total material
quantities.

In this project, we will use detailed methods of estimation for measuring of the total
quantities of materials which has been used in the two previously mentioned projects.

CHAPTER EIGHT

CONCLUSION
We learned to read construction drawings, and measuring quantity of material that needed
for a project in our Project, also creating tendering.

The main goals that we achieved from this project is understanding all tasks and their
functions as well as direct and indirect cost of the tasks, and we have learned the importance
of any part of the building.

We learned to read bill of quantity (BOQ) and filling it by using the quantity of material
that measured by quantity estimation and we measured the cost of each item and putted it
into BOQ and determining the total cost of the Project.

The prices are considered based on current labour, workmanship and material and
equipment All the item price is calculated for the unit price in the tender and the total
quantity of that item is obtained.

and the total cost of this building is 100,086,049.4 IQD. This price is good indication to
government directorates to have a value to this building in outskirt areas. In future tenders
the government directorates can use this work as a base for their tender and price.

Recommendations:
The following points is recommended for future work:

1. The tender must update to consider several items for example, new materials used in
market, Ponza block.
2. The prices need competitions and different sources can be used to obtain the price.
3. More detail drawings should be available to get more detail estimation.
