Morphology Study Guide 2018
Dear student!
Welcome to the English Morphology module! This Study Guide brings the guidelines and the calendar of the discussions about this module. No pre-
requisite is required to attend this subject.
This Module will enable you, as English Language Teacher as well as the user of language/s, to distinguish Word from lexeme. This will take you to the
discussion about word formation processes which will help you to expand your vocabulary and get what each morpheme mean in a word and get the
whole meaning of it in case you find complex words.
1
In our discussions, you will be equipped with the knowledge which will help you to distinguish grammatical conditioning from phonological when
choosing allomorphs. Finally you will also be able to characterize affixes according to their lexical strata.
- Since there is no Module for this subject we will use Katamba and Stonhan and Stonhan (2006) and Bauer (2003) as the basic resource for most of
our discussions. This does not mean that you should limit yourself to these books, there are many other books, articles as well as online videos that
you can use for your study.
- Some material will be available to you via platform. Please, make sure you get the sources that will enable you to follow our progress in this
module. Do not keep your queries for tomorrow as it might be very late.
- In this module you will write two tests, and two additional online tests for your self-study assessment. The local tutor will ensure that you submit an
assignment for assessment purpose before the end of the semester.
- At the end of the semester, you will write a Final Exam and a Resit Exam (for those who might need it).
- It will not be possible for us to consider the interactions via e-mail as part of our assessments.
i. The subject specific Tutor (Joaquim Vinte) who is also a lecturer at the Department of Language Sciences, Communication and Arts, in
Linguistics area is going to bring in details the content through the Platform as well as the way the subject will be monitored including the
submission of the written works, the written tests and the participations in the platform debates, all with evaluative purpose.
ii. A general/local tutor who will be available at CEaD will assist you for good interaction with the specific tutor; he/she will help you in your
studies, time management and how to do all the activities taking place at CEaD.
2
iii. Classmates: Distance Learning can be a lonely activity therefore, I strongly suggest you, as a way of keeping motivated, to create a studying
group or joining an existing one. Interacting with other students is an important tool for this type of studies taking into consideration that this can
help you get rid of any problems/doubts before addressing them to the tutors. You will be asked to discuss, either in the class, guided by the
General Tutor or in the Platform, interacting with the Specific Tutor. Working as a team can help in your performance.
