Human Builder – Assessment

Breakthrough
Accurate body hierarchy
 99 links define the skeletal structure with 148 degrees of freedom for realistic
joint movements and constraints. HBR also possesses a fully articulated spine,
shoulder and hand model. These provide the user with exceptional flexibility to
use the appropriate anthropometrical variables to tackle specific problems.

Library management
 Manikin oriented libraries, such as angular limitations, comfort angles, maximum
force exertion, and other preferred angles are provided, as well as global
posture libraries and local posture libraries (grasp, pinch, grip, hook, etc.).

Advanced vision simulation

© 1997 – 2001 DASSAULT SYSTEMES

 4 types of vision are available; ambinocular, binocular, monocular left and
monocular right. Vision behavioral models are used to replicate the actual
movement of the human eye so that users see precisely what the manikin sees.
The sophisticated vision features available in HBR also allow to display
peripheral cones, central cones, blind spot and line of sight. Furthermore,
adjustable fields of view and distance attributes are also provided.

DASSAULT SYSTEMES - Date Page 26
Manikin Model Enhancement
Enhancement of the manikin appearance in order to make it
more “realistic”

 Use the technology of the surfaces

subdivision (Catmull-Clark)

 The “Reference Mesh” used here

has been transformed / scaled to
best match the ellipses dimensions
 Levels of details are still
available with the new
subdivision technology
(adjustment is done via
the current “Resolution”
slider)

Manikin Model Enhancement

Introduction of a new spine segmentation based on anatomic

nomenclature in order to improve the spine manipulation and
analysis
 More logical and standard way
to move the spine is which
vertebras are group into two
specific sections: lumbar and
thoracic
 Eliminate the problem of
selecting and moving each
vertebra of the manikin

 “Postural Score” and “Posture Editor” dialog

box ,the limitations and the preferred

angle user interface as been modified to
set angles value for each section and not
for the each vertebra
 As for the manikin tree, the individual
vertebras will no longer be listed

DASSAULT SYSTEMES - Date Page 28

Manikin Model Enhancement

The spine model and trunk silhouette has been rework in

order to improve accuracy and realism of the manikin

 Modification consists of a
repositioning of the lower
lumbar joint (L5/S1) based on
mean scaling relationships with
the pelvis width (Schneider et
al., 1994)
 In the new model, the pelvis
(line between H-point and spine
joint L5/S1) is more vertical or
in line with the thigh segment in
standing posture

© 1997 – 2001 DASSAULT SYSTEMES

 The trunk’s curves have been
accentuated in order to follow
the spine curve

DASSAULT SYSTEMES - Date Page 29

User Interface Enhancement

Completion of the Manikin’s structure in order to have one

node (root) for each manikin’s attributes in the PPR Tree
 New Profiles Section for all general
attributes (not associated to a specific
segment), that shouldn’t be modified
during simulation
New Settings Section to set the
Manikin in his environment (posturing
& positioning)
Standardization of the Copy/Paste
process for copying between manikins
and catalog usage

© 1997 – 2001 DASSAULT SYSTEMES

Follow the principle of having one node
per attribute
“Lines of sight” have been relocated
under “Body” node

DASSAULT SYSTEMES - Date Page 30

User Interface Enhancement

Having one “Properties” dialog box or tab for each Attribute of

the manikin.
 New dialog boxes or tabs have
been created for the following
properties: Segment Offsets
(now called Offsets), Angular
Limitations and Preferred
Angles
 “Offset” includes a list of
segments on which offsets have
been set and a reset button
 “Limitation” tab is similar to the
“Offset” tab but with
information on the DOF and the
Percentage of accommodation

© 1997 – 2001 DASSAULT SYSTEMES

 “Preferred Angles” includes the
segment name, the DOF and a
“Remove” button replaces the
“Reset” button

DASSAULT SYSTEMES - Date Page 31

MHB – Manikin Catalogs Enhancement

Easier way for selecting manikin’s attributes to be saved in the

catalog

 In the dialog box, user will no

longer have to specify the
manikin and segments from
which he wants to save
manikin’s attributes
 Selection is made directly in
the PPR tree
 Attributes can be selected on
different manikins. If two or
more elements are in conflict,
only the first one will be saved

© 1997 – 2001 DASSAULT SYSTEMES

DASSAULT SYSTEMES - Date Page 32
MHB – Manikin Catalogs Enhancement

Capability to save new Manikin’s Attributes inside catalogs

 New attributes that can

now be saved in the
catalog are the following:

 Constraints
 Loads
 Manikin’s Profile and
Settings:
 Display
 Colouring
 Attaches
 Referential
 Locks

Manikin Catalogs Enhancement

Capability to save more than one data type inside a catalog

element (combination of manikin’s attributes)
 New concept of Combination for
the manikin’s attributes saved in a
catalog
 It is now possible to save more then
one data type on a catalog element
 The list of attributes can be multi-
selected using the CTRL keys, at the
Save time
 All the attributes or only selected
ones can be applied.
 The current combination “Posture

HBR – Easier Manikin Positioning
Introduction of a new method for moving the manikin in IK
Mode using a 3D Mouse supported by V5
 3D mouse connected into a serial or USB
port works in parallel with the regular
mouse without affecting its use.
 The spatial representation is like if user
stands behind the manikin and places his
hand on the manikin’s hand, foot,
head…
Then, for example, pushing forward, left
on the mouse, will make the manikin’s
segment go forward, left…
 Rotations are available in IK ‘Segment
Frame’ Mode.
