DOMINICAN PRAYER AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS

Composed by: Rev. Fr. Clarence Marquez, OP
For the Dominican Family Retreat 2015

Always already, O Lord,

Here at the foot of your cross,
Like our Holy Father Saint Dominic
We are here-
In our vows,
In our prayers and study,
In contemplation of your Word,
In imitation of your deed,
In fulfillment of our cause,
In preaching your Gospel of Mercy,
This, our Jubilee Year.

We are here
Gazing upon your feet;
Beholding your wounds, your blood
overflowing;
Inhaling, Immersing ourselves
In the Holy Breath of Your Spirit.
O how lovely are your feet!
Upon the mountain of Golgotha,
Proclaiming the gospel of peace,
Building your church,
Giving us life and grace.

From our hearts, we pray,

On this, our Jubilee
Clear our eyes,
Open our ears,
Strengthen our arms,
Motivate our feet,
Make us your voice;
In speaking to you in prayer,
And speaking about you in preaching,
You, Our God,
Our Life-full of grace and truth!

In sending out, our going forth

Fill us with the energy and ebullience and
excellence of the Holy Spirit,
Bear us in the Word, whom we bear,
Make us partake of the mercy we
Proclaim
Bring us home to your promised kingdom.

These, we ask,
Under the mantle of Mary, our Mother,
In the company of our holy Dominican
brothers and sisters
In heaven and on earth,
In your NAME, our one preaching.
Amen.
ENTRUSTMENT TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

O Virgin Most Holy, Mother of the Incarnate Word and our Mother, we come
before you today to implore your protection and to entrust the Order of Preachers,
especially the brothers and sisters of the Asia Pacific Region. Look upon us and,
with a mother’s care, guide us along the paths of truth and love. Ave maria after
stanzas
O Mary, handmaid of the Lord, with your docile “yes” you became the Mother of
the Almighty, impress on our lives your docility and your attentive silence and
teach us to embrace the divine will without reserve. Speak to us of your Son, and
tell us about your journey of following him on the path of faith.
Mary, Virgin of the Magnificat, speak to us of Jesus, so that the freshness of our
faith may shine in our eyes and warm the heart of those we meet, as you did when
visiting Elizabeth. Help us to bring joy to the world and, as at Cana, lead every
person involved in service of others to do only what Jesus will tell them.
Mother of hope, in the darkness of Holy Saturday you journeyed with unfailing
trust towards the dawn of Easter. You willingly and generously cooperated in the
work of redemption allowing the sword of pain to pierce your soul, until the
supreme hour of the Cross, when you kept watch on Calvary, standing beside your
Son, who died that we might live. Grant that your children may discern at all times,
even those that are darkest, the signs of God’s loving presence.
Virgin of Nazareth, Queen of the family, make our Christian families school of
evangelical life, enriched by the gift of many vocations to the priesthood and to the
consecrated life. Keep intact the unity of our families today so threatened from all
sides, making them hearths of serenity and of harmony, where patient dialogue
dispels difficulties and differences.
Mother of forgiveness and reconciliation, watch over those who are divided and in
crisis. Help us to find the strength to offer reconciliation and forgiveness. Help us
to become patient and humble, but also free and courageous, just as you were at the
hour of the Cross.
O Clement Virgin, Mother of humanity, turn your gaze upon us and those who
govern us. Comfort those who weep, who suffer, who struggle because of human
injustice. Sustain those who waver under the weight of effort and who look at the
future without hope. Encourage those who work to build a better world where
justice triumphs and where selfishness, hate and violence cease.
Mother of Mercy, Star of Hope, our life and our joy, we thank you and we renew
the offering of our lives, certain that you will never abandon us, especially in the
dark and difficult moments of life. Be with us always, now and at the hour of our
death.
Amen.
INTRODUCTORY RITES
ENTRANCE
While the Presider and the concelebrants proceed to the altar, Entrance Hymn is sung.
When the Presider comes to the altar, he makes the customary reverence with the ministers and kisses it.

GREETING
Presider:

I n the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.
People:
Amen.
Presider:
Peace be with you.
People:
And with your spirit.
PENITENTIAL ACT
The Presider introduces the celebration and leads the people to the penitential rite:
Presider:

B rothers and sisters,

let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together the formula of general confession:
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous
fault;
Then they continue:
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and
Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our
God.
Presider:
May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
People:
Amen.

KYRIE
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
COLLECT
Presider:
Let us pray.
Pause for silent prayer.

L ook kindly, Lord, we pray,

on the devotion of your people,
that those who by self-denial are restrained in body
may by the fruit of good works be renewed in mind.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

R: Amen.
Commentator:
Please be seated.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading: Jonah 3:1-10
The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
“Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you.”
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD’s bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing,
“Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,”
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh,

he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles:
“Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep,
shall taste anything;
they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.
Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God;
every man shall turn from his evil way
and from the violence he has in hand.
Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish.”
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

The word of the Lord.

R. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19

R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;

in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

A clean heart create for me, O God,

and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.

For you are not pleased with sacrifices;

should I offer a burnt offering, you would not accept it.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit;
a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

Verse before the Gospel:

Even now, says the LORD,

return to me with your whole heart
for I am gracious and merciful.

GOSPEL Luke 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

The Gospel of the Lord

R. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

HOMILY
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
Presider:

J onah discovered that there is no getting away from the

Lord. We now turn in prayer to God the Father for the grace
to change our lives and to believe firmly in Christ’s call to
repentance. Together we say:
Lord, hear our prayer.

That the leaders of the Church may work tirelessly in bringing

God’s message of repentance to those who seek the Lord with a
sincere heart. Let us pray to the Lord.
That this season may be a time of renewal and conversion. Let
us pray to the Lord.
That like the citizens of Nineveh, we may renounce our evil
ways and turn to God with a humble and contrite spirit. Let us
pray to the Lord.
That the sick may find security and love from those who care
for them. Let us pray to the Lord.
That the dead may find peace and happiness in the Kingdom of
God. Let us pray to the Lord.
Presider:

F ather of all, you gave us the sign of Jonah to foreshadow the

coming of your Son. As from all eternity you willed his
Resurrection, associate us with him forever. We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
R: Amen.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR
AND THE GIFTS
During the preparation of the gifts, the Offertory song is sung and the altar table is prepared.
The Presider takes the paten with the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar says:

B lessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

for through your goodness we have received
the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.
People:
Blessed be God forever.
The deacon pours wine and a little water into the chalice saying inaudibly:
By the mystery of this water and wine
may we come to share in the divinity of Christ,
who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
Then the Presider takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar says:

B lessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

for through your goodness we have received
the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.
People:
Blessed be God forever.
The Presider bows and says inaudibly:
With humble spirit and contrite heart
may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.
He may now incense the offerings and the altar. Afterwards the deacon or a minister incenses the
Presider and people.
Next the Presider stands at the side of the altar and washes his hands saying inaudibly:
Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
Standing at the center of the altar, facing the people, he extends and then joins his hands, saying:
Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
People:
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Presider:

w e offer to you, O Lord,

what you have given to be dedicated to your name,
that, just as for our benefit you make these gifts a Sacrament,
so you may let them become for us an eternal remedy.
Through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen.
PREFACE
V: The Lord be with you.
R: And with your spirit.
V: Lift up your hearts.
R: We lift them up to the Lord.
V: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R: It is right and just.

I t is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

For through bodily fasting you restrain our faults,

raise up our minds,
and bestow both virtue and its rewards,
through Christ our Lord.

Through him the Angels praise your majesty,

Dominions adore and Powers tremble before you.
Heaven and the Virtues of heaven and the blessed Seraphim
worship together with exultation.
May our voices, we pray, join with theirs
in humble praise, as we acclaim:

SANCTUS
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II
The Presider, with hands extended, says:

Y ou are indeed Holy, O Lord,

the fount of all holiness.
He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and the chalice together, saying:
So that they may become for us the Body and Blood
of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
He joins his hands.
In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly and
distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.
At the time he was betrayed
and entered willingly into his Passion,
He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,
FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration.
After this, the Priest continues:
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:
he took the chalice
and, once more giving thanks,
he gave it to his disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU
AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.
He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.
The mystery of faith.
And the people continue, acclaiming:
We proclaim your Death, O Lord,
and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says:

T herefore, as we celebrate

the memorial of his Death and Resurrection,

we offer you, Lord,
the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks that you have held us worthy
to be in your presence and minister to you.

Humbly we pray
that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Concelebrant 1:

Remember, Lord, your Church,

spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with Francis our Pope
and Luis Antonio our Bishop,
and all the clergy.
Concelebrant 2:

Remember also our brothers and sisters

who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face.

Have mercy on us all, we pray,

that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with blessed Joseph, her Spouse
with the blessed Apostles,
and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life,
and may praise and glorify you
He joins his hands.
Through your Son Jesus Christ †
Presider:
He takes the chalice and the paten with the host and raising both, he says:

T HROUGH HIM,
AND WITH HIM, AND IN HIM,
O GOD, ALMIGHTY FATHER,
IN THE UNITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT,
ALL GLORY AND HONOR IS YOURS,
FOREVER AND EVER.
The people acclaim:
Amen.
COMMUNION RITE
Presider:

A t the Savior’s command and formed

by divine teaching
we dare to say:
He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed by thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
With hands extended, the Presider alone continues, saying:
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.
The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming:
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
SIGN OF PEACE
Then the Presider, with hands extended, says aloud:

L ord Jesus Christ,

who said to your Apostles:
Peace I leave you, my peace I give you,
look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.
He joins his hands.
Who live and reign forever and ever.
The people reply:
Amen.
The Presider, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds:
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
The people reply:
And with your spirit.
Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Presider, adds:
Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
And all offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses peace, communion, and
charity.
The Presider gives the sign of peace to a Deacon or minister.
Then he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the chalice, saying quietly:
May this mingling of the Body and Blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.
BREAKING OF THE BREAD
Meanwhile the following is sung or said:
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.
The invocation may even be repeated several times if the fraction is prolonged. Only the final time,
however,
is grant us peace said.

PRIVATE PREPARATION
Then the Presider, with hands joined, says quietly:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood,
from all my sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.

COMMUNION
The Presider genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above the
chalice,
while facing the people, says aloud:

B ehold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
And together with the people he adds once:
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
The Presider, facing the altar, says quietly:
May the Body of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ.
Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:
May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.
After this, he takes the paten or ciborium and approaches the communicants. The Presider raises a host
slightly and shows it to each of the communicants, saying:
The Body of Christ.
The communicant replies:
Amen.
While the Presider is receiving the Body of Christ, the Communion Chant begins.
When the distribution of Communion is over, the Presider or a Deacon or an acolyte purifies the paten
over the chalice and also the chalice itself. While he carries out the purification, the Priest says quietly:
What has passed our lips as food, O Lord,
may we possess in purity of heart,
that what has been given to us in time
may be our healing for eternity.
Then the Presider may return to the chair. If appropriate, a sacred silence may be observed for a while,
or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may be sung.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Presider:
Let us pray.
Pause for silent prayer.

O God, who never cease to nourish us by your Sacrament,

grant that the refreshment you give us through it
may bring us unending life.
Through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen.
CONCLUDING RITE
Presider:
The Lord be with you.
People:
And with your spirit.
The Presider blesses the people saying:

May almighty God bless you,

the Father, and the Son,and the Holy Spirit.

R. Amen.
DISMISSAL
Deacon/Presider:

G o forth, the Mass is ended.

People:
Thanks be to God.
The final hymn is sung.
VENERATION OF THE CROSS
ENTRANCE HYMN

V. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
R. Amen.

V. The Lord be with You.

R. And with Your Spirit.

The presider introduces the celebration in these or similar words:

My dear brothers and sisters,

We give thanks and praise to the Lord
Whose inspiration and grace have gathered us together in this retreat.
At one point in the life of our dear St. Thomas,
He anxiously asked whether what he had written
On the mysteries of the Christian faith was correct.
And the Crucified One answered him:
“You have spoken well of me, Thomas. What is your reward be?”
And the answer Thomas gave Him
Is what we Thomasians beg the Lord:
That we be given the grace to courageously tell Him:
“Nothing but Yourself, Lord!”

We beg the Crucified Lord,

To grant us the grace to embrace
The mystery of our daily crosses with humility and obedience,
And as St. Thomas did in one of his prayers,
To grant us a mind to know Him,
A heart to seek Him, wisdom to find Him,
A life pleasing to Him,
Faithful perseverance in waiting for Him,
And a hope of finally embracing Him.
OPENING PRAYER

Presider:
Let us pray

Pause for a moment of prayerful silence.

O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son

Should undergo the Cross to save the human race,
Grant, we pray,
That we, who have known His mystery on earth,
May merit the grace of His redemption in heaven.
Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

A reader, another person present, or the minister reads a text of Sacred Scripture, taken either
from the Lectionary for Mass or from those given here.

READING Phil.2: 6-11

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Philippians.

Brothers and sisters: Christ Jesus, though He was in the form of God, did not deem
equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, H emptied Himself, taking the
form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, He
humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of
this, God greatly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every
name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on
earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.

The Word of the Lord.

R. Thanks be to God.
PSALM WITH ALLELUIA

R. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Psalm 78: 1bc-2,34-35,36-37,38

Hearken my people, to my teaching;

Incline You ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable,
I will utter mysteries form of old. R./

While He slew them, they sought Him

And inquired after God again,
Remembering that God was their rock
And the Most High God, their Redeemer. R./

But they flattered Him with their mouths

And lied to Him with their tongues,
Though their hearts were nor steadfast toward Him-
Nor were they faithful to His covenant. R./

But he, being merciful, forgave their sin

And destroyed them not;
Often, He turned back against His anger
And let none of His wrath be roused. R./

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy Cross you have
redeemed the world.
R. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Jesus said to Nicodemus: “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has
come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent
in the desert, so much the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes
in Him may have eternal life.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who
believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send
His Son to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

The Gospel of the Lord,

R. Praise be to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

R. And with your spirit.

Deacon/Priest

Presider:
