I. Context and Rationale Study background

This action research conforms challenges in online learning, specifically in developing

the participation of students on online learning. The new normal brought by the Covid-19
pandemic have also brought us new modes of learning. With the sudden implementation of
lockdowns, prohibition of face-to-face classes was imposed to contain the spread of this
contagious virus. With sudden the use of virtual classrooms like google classroom, zoom etc.,
students became passive and inactive during discussions due to this new learning set ups.
Therefore, education sectors need to come up with ways to effectively continue a smooth
learning and teaching process considering the situation.

The use of technology in education have elevated. Different applications, softwares and
other learning platforms have been widely used. However, it is a challenge to teachers how to
make their learners active and participative with these new set ups of learning. Teachers need
to develop ways to maintain the attention of the learners during sessions. With the available
resources they have, teachers must creatively think of how to make these softwares, sites and
applications entertaining yet educational to learners.

Outdoor environmental educators and traditional classroom teachers continuously search

for new and innovative ways of increasing student participation and engagement. For
students, participation and engagement are important because they function as a behaviour
path way that contributes to increased learning and development (Reeve, Jang, Carrell, Joen,
& Barch, 2004; Connell & Wellborn, 1991). Participation and engagement predict students’
achievement and comprehension of educational material (Linnenbrink & Pintrich, 2003).
Many teachers overlook the importance classroom arrangements have on their students’
academic success and the creation of a positive learning environment. Teachers can foster
greater student participation and engagement by paying particular attention to their classroom
arrangement. Circle formations are frequently used for lectures, directions, and discussions in
outdoor and indoor environmental education classroom settings. Circle formations, just like
conventional classroom arrangements, can have benefits as well as detriments based on the
leader or teacher’s selected configuration (Wasnock, 2010).

During our classes with the Grade 10 students of Northwestern University, we had
personally experienced the inactiveness of the students, so to provide solution to this problem
and to make classes active, purposefully for the students to get higher grades, to develop
teacher’s performance specifically in making classes student-centered class. This the school
institution will produce quality graduates.

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION STRATEGY

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools, colleges, and other
educational institutions have embraced online education platforms. With e-learning web apps,
you can provide an effective virtual learning experience to your learners.E-learning web apps
improve students’ academic progress. It has surpassed the barriers of space and time and
made the students, teachers, and parents stay connected from anywhere in and around the
world.

As the Kahoot movement has continued to grow in schools across the world, with
more than 6 million teachers and 800 million students using Kahoot! in over 200 countries,
researchers across the globe have studied the impact of using Kahoot! in the classroom on
student learning outcomes. A recent article from Elsevier’s Computers & Education, the
leading journal on computer-supported education, authored by Rabail Tahir and myself, took
a comprehensive look at this research by conducting a literature review of 93 studies showing
the effects of using Kahoot! for learning. According to SmallBizTrends, 90% of students
consider online learning to be better than traditional learning. With e-learning web apps, you
can keep your learners active in the virtual learning network.

Kahoot is a game-based learning app to improve students’ engagement in the virtual

classroom. With more than 50% of US educators using this platform, it is possible to create
quizzes, host live games, and more. All these activities will be depending on the lesson
concepts, therefore, you can make students master each of the lessons via games and fun
tasks.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

This chapter will be a compilation of data to be gathered in the methods and

procedure the researchers will take in order to conduct the research. It presents the discussion
on the research methodology of the study, the participants, procedure of data gathering, and
data analysis plan and interpretation of the study.

a. Participants/ Other sources of Data

In accordance to ethics approval for a study involving human participation from the
students of Grade 10, Section Serenity at the High School Department of Northwestern
University with the approval of the research protocol, research proposal and proposed

intervention including a consent form. Along with the questions pertaining to the topic that
the research will use to identify the frequency of the students participation before and after
the use of Kahoot. The population are technologically literate as young ones are considered
more acquainted with technology, however technical assistance is still needed. In this study,
during the class session without the use of Kahoot or without intervention, the class is still as
a typical class wherein the participation of the students and scores of the students are
recorded. However, during the class session with the use of Kahoot, there is no academic
risk if the students fail/do not wish to participate in the class session as this is just an
experimental class, moreover, it will not affect the overall class standing for the course or
subject.

b. Data Collection and Materials

This action research will use two online class sessions with an our for each session
using google meet, the first session for without the use of Kahoot and the second session for
with the use of Kahoot. To record the needed data for this study, the researchers will
construct a table conforming three columns, 1st column for specific questions about the topic
that the students will answer. The questions that will be used are similar to the both 1st and
2nd class sessions. 2nd column is intended to record the number of frequency of
participation by the students for each question from the first class session (without the use of
kahoot) and 3rd column is intended to record the number of frequency of participation by the
students for each question from the second class session (with the use of Kahoot). Correct
and wrong or irrelevant answers are still be recorded as these are all forms of participation
from the students.

c. Data Analysis Plan

Data analysis focuses on comparison of result from 2nd column, total number of frequencies
from class session without Kahoot and 3rd column, total number of frequencies from class
session using Kahoot to improve the class participation of the Grade 10 Serenity. During the
class session without Kahoot, there are questions asked to the students during the discussion.
Using the in-call message to answer or the students turned on their microphones to recite
their answers will be recorded to the 2nd column. On the other hand, during the class session
with use of Kahoot, the same questions will be used but now students will answer the
questions via Kahoot and then researchers will recorded as well. The result of the total
frequencies from the 2nd column and the total frequencies from 3rd column will be
compared if there is improvement with their participation. This will also identify if the
utilization of Kahoot is an effective intervention to improve the class participation of Grade
10 Serenity Students of Northwestern University in Science Chemistry.

VII. Plan for Dissemination and Utilization

After the corrections instructed by the Panel were incorporated. This study reproduced
and submitted to the college and to the library. This study is timely as we cannot totally
eradicate Covid-19 Virus, therefore the threat for another wave of lockdown is still potential
and due to this, unfortunately we are again forced to have online classes, and problems during
online classes are the inactive and the passiveness of the learners to participate, so this study
could provide a solution to such problem. This study could also be used as a reference for
future researches. Educators as well as future educators could also use Kahoot as an
intervention specifically in making class more active. Students will improve their academic
grades as performance task is 40% of the learner’s grade.

Table no. 1 using the information from the table which were gathered from the recorded
responses there was a low level of participation rate among the grade 10students on the
discussion without intervention with only 9.4 % of the class responding. Some students
reported through the survey that on of the reasons why they are hindered to answer is that
they fear embarrassment. This sentiment relates to the fact that most of them are ages 15 to
16, thus they are on their adolescent stage, a period of being timid and afraid to make errors
and giving responses specially in front of their peers.

Getting 0% of participation in some of the questions is another apparent trend from the table
and upon reviewing these question, we found out that these questions were mathematical in
nature.

The used of Kahoot with reward system offered a motivational tool for students to increase
their involvement in the class discussion. Because from 9.4% of class participation had a
positive increase to 75%. This increase in participation is correlated to the students who rae

motivated to stay focus because according to them the intervention used was fun and they
enjoyed a little competition while learning.

IX. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

Conclusions
We the researchers of Bachelor of secondary Education major in Science
conducted class in the junior high department as we go by with our practice
teaching internship we are observed that students are not participating particularly
in our synchronous classes so upon reviewing in this situation we are task to add
or level up the participation of our class synchronous by using the e learning web
tool which is Kahoot . Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that brings
engagement and fun to 1+ billion players every year at school, at work, and at
home.Based on the result that we had after we conducted the class with the used
of e learning website which is kahoot the frequency of the class is higher than we
expected from Grade 10 students of junior high school in Northwestern University
given the fact that the students are not shy on the held class but more importantly
is that students are able to compete and enjoyed in interaction with questions and
answers portion and in participating in the class. This assured that by using e
learning website especially what we used kahoot is very convenient in obtaining a
class participation that may also be enhanced students with low self steem to
participate in the class.

Recomendations
Based on the above findings and conclusions, there are significant rise in student's
participation in comparison to the controlled group or the class without Kahoot.
This action research study then suggests that the use of Kahoot can improve
student’s participation. Therefore, online classes that experiences learners being
passive or learner's inactiveness may use Kahoot to improve learner's
participation.
