Executive Summary
Our Understanding
Utilities is one of the most important industries to help the world transition toward a more
sustainable energy future. Energy transition is key for the decarbonization of the economy.
The energy transition can happen only with far greater levels of engagement between utilities and
customers. And leveraging the tremendous development of new energy technologies will
dramatically transform the energy backbone.
With regard to energy transition, we see very interesting developments happening: By 2050, power
generation triples compared to today’s level, and renewables supply 90% of total electricity by
2050(1). The International Energy Agency(2) states that the electricity sector is experiencing its
most dramatic transformation since its creation more than a century ago. The emergence of
photovoltaic and wind power gives unprecedented importance to the flexible operational power
system to keep the lights on. The total average investments(2) for the Energy transition for the
period 2021-2050 is forecasted to be 50 USD billion/year (excluding fossil fuel and nuclear).
In this new energy world, governments and regulators will ask utilities to act as champions of
energy transition and enable climate economy business models. As a consequence, utilities have to
transform the key pillars into intelligent enterprises:

SAP is building an open innovation ecosystem in the utilities industry to help our customers run at
their best by maximizing their investment in SAP solutions. In collaboration with select startups,
SAP is helping utilities transform their operations by focusing on four core transformations:
customers, energy and market, service, and asset transformation. The startups presented in this
document are all official SAP Partners with integrated solutions to SAP applications and are
available on SAP Store.
SAP has been supporting the core utilities business processes across the entire industry value
chain for many years, partnering with utilities across the globe in multiple regulatory frameworks
and acting in different market roles, from power generation to energy retail, within transmission,
distribution, and meter and market operations.
A recent survey done among SAP’s largest customers confirms the value of the SAP proposition.
As indicated in the above graph, IT spend levels reached an average of 1.4% in Europe and 2.7% in
North America, well below benchmarks from analysts.
