Garden Freedom

Gardening is horticulture's practice of growing and cultivating plants. Ornamental plants

are frequently grown in gardens for their flowers, foliage, or overall appearance; useful
plants, such as root vegetables, leaf vegetables, fruits, and herbs, are grown for
consumption, dye use, or medical or cosmetic use.

Gardening can range in scale from fruit orchards to long boulevard plantings with one or
more different types of shrubs, trees, and herbaceous plants, to residential back
gardens with lawns and foundation plantings, to container gardens grown indoors or
outdoors. Gardening can be highly specialized, with only one type of plant grown, or it
can include a diverse range of plants in mixed plantings. It requires active participation
in plant cultivation and is typically labor-intensive, distinguishing it from farming or
forestry.

The nature of gardening

Gardening in its ornamental sense requires a certain level of civilization before it can
thrive. People have made efforts to shape their environment into an attractive display
wherever that level has been attained, in all parts of the world and at all times. Thus,
gardening appears to be a primitive response to nature, engendering a desire to
produce growth and harmony in a creative partnership with it.
It is possible to simply enjoy gardens as a spectator. Most people who cultivate a
domestic plot, however, derive satisfaction from being involved in the processes of
tending plants. They discover that paying attention to seasonal changes as well as the
plethora of small "events" in any shrubbery or herbaceous border improves their
understanding and appreciation of gardens in general.

Following World War II, there was a phenomenal increase in interest in gardening in
Western countries. A lawn with flower beds and possibly a vegetable patch has become
a desirable feature of home ownership. The increased interest resulted in an
unprecedented increase in business for horticultural suppliers, nurseries, garden
centers, and seedsmen. Books, journals, and newspaper columns on gardening have a
devoted readership, and television and radio programs on the subject have a devoted
audience.

Gardening has a wide range of appeal.

Gardening has many and varied appeals, and it is possibly unique among the crafts and
arts in that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and levels of ambition. At its most
basic, but not least valuable, level, the gardening journey begins with a child's
amazement that a packet of seeds can produce a charming festival of color. At the adult
level, it can be as simple as assisting in the cultivation of a good and edible carrot, and
it can elicit almost parental pride. Because there are so many variables, higher levels of
appreciation require a knowledge of the complexities of the gardening process, which is
analogous to a chess game with nature.
Visit some of the world's great gardens at different seasons to see how individual
groups of plants, trees, and shrubs relate to the overall design; study plant positioning in
terms of color, texture, and weight of leaf or blossom; and appreciate the use of special
features such as ponds or watercourses, pavilions, or rockeries. Gardening on a global
scale allows you to gain a better understanding of the broad cultural influences, as well
as the variations in climate and soil, that have resulted in so many different approaches
to gardening.
