APPROACH TO THE PROJECT (Technical Approach and

Methodology)

A network is a group of computers, peripherals, applications, databases,

data, voice devices and video devices which are connected by
communication mediums. When the devices are in close proximity, such
as in a building, the network is referred to as a Local Area Network
(LAN). When the devices are in two or more distant locations, the
network is referred to as a Wide Area Network (WAN). But networks
bring with them security risks which if well mitigated, allows the benefits
of communication to outweigh the risks.
 Discovery Phase

Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd which is one of the companies that

attended the sites visit at Department of corporate services all offices
assessed the network in an unstructured approach rather than
structured network audit methodology. An ITT outlining what is needed
had been issued hence the discovery phase was to confirm if what is in
the ITT tally with what is physically on site. It was observed that the
cabling on site is either cat 6

 Analysis Phase

The ITT outlined what is expected from the bidders. During the analysis
stage, Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd verified that indeed all the
components outlined meet the expected throughput of the network.
That is if a gigabit network is required, all the composite components
outline must support gigabit speed

 Architecture and Design solution

From the discovery phase above, it was realised that the physical
topology in use is a star. The all the end nodes (network points) are
connected to the cabinet forming in a star topology. Since the core
architecture is already in place, the topology will still be maintained as a
star. The network will be designed with the following design solution in
mind

o Reliability

Reliability of a network is concerned with the ability of a network

to carry out a desired operation such as "communication". At
Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd we have adopted three (3)
approaches to insure that we provide our clients with robust
networks being.

 Improve the reliability of the individual components of

the network.
This entails using time tested reliable products to design
the network.
 Increase the number of alternative paths available to
origin-destination (OD) pairs.
Providing fail over path to ensure data arrives at its
destination
 Decrease the number of intermediate links between
the origin and the destination nodes.
Provide shortest path to destination.

All this solution come at a steep cost and in order to contain the
cost we usual use 1 and 3. This will provide robustness and
reliability needed by the client at a reasonable price.

o Scalability

Over time companies will naturally grow, that is have additional

requirements, offices, staff and workload. Networks must adapt to
those changes and continue to provide top notch performance.
Scalability encompasses several technologies that enable a system
to accommodate larger workloads while maintaining consistent
and acceptable levels of performance.

At Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, we provide best equipment that

are built with the natural evolution of companies in mind. That is
we procure equipment that are scalable looking at the future
technological advancements.

o Maintainability

All equipment used by Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd carry a 12 to

24 months’ warrantee period and if a maintenance contract is
enter into with clients, Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd can
continue to service the products until they reach end of life after
10 years. This shows that the product used by Timelogic
Enterprises (Pty) Ltd are durable, maintainable, the parts are
readily available and the technical know-how to service and do
preventative maintenance is available in house.
o Security

Network Security is not a once off thing. It is an all-encompassing

approach which entails all resources that are on the network. Over
time new security threat and vulnerabilities are discovered hence
there is a need to keep updating the firmware. Timelogic
Enterprises (Pty) Ltd will ensure that at the time of installation and
configuration, the network is secure. We also advice the client to
update software for all devices in the network to ensure that they
have the latest security patches. This will minimise chances of
security breach.

The other aspect is physical security of network equipment. The

client must ensure that all network devices are secured from theft.
Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd as part of its cooperate
responsibility we will assess the security threats and provide
recommendation to the client at the time of hand over.

The Ethernet cable that will be used is cat 6a. The length between the
patch panel and the face plate will vary depending on the distance of
the point from the cabinet but will not exceed 96m. The remaining 4m is
for the patch cord and fly lead making a total of 100m which the
Ethernet is cabling standard.

Depending on the number of switches and brush panels needed in

compliance with what is stipulated in the ITT, a 12U cabinet cabinet will
be wall mounted. Where a cabinet is already in place, the condition of
the cabinet will be checked. That is check if the fan is working and that
it is tightly secured to the wall.

The switches will be supplied, registered with DIT and correctly

configured so as to ensure they connect to the government data
network and the internet.

All the points will be labelled and tested.

Implementation Strategy/ Plan

As part of tendering, an initial project plan is included but during site
hand over meeting, a detailed project implementation plan with exact
timelines and deliverable milestone which forms part of the
communication strategy will be handed to the client so that they are
able to also monitor the project progress and quality.

The implementation plan is how the project will be executed to conform

to set standards. Timelogic Enterprises Pty Ltd implementation plan is as
follows

 Commencement date
 Resources on boarding
 Expected Completion date
 Hand over date
 Duration of the project,
 Deliverable milestones checks
 Scheduled meeting and/or inspection reports intervals.
 Business continuity during the project.
 Expected test result
 Project quality control
 Grievance handling procedures
 Maintenance and support

The highlighted item is of utmost importance to clients during project

execution, that is will they still be able to provide services to their clients
during the recabling period? At Timelogic Enterprises (PTY) Ltd, we
strive to maintain minimal service disruptions where possible. In that
regard, the project will be executed in the shortest time possible and if
possible we can opt to work after working hours or weekend so that the
normal business of our customer is not disrupted. This plan will have to
be agreed with our client beforehand as they will have to provide
someone to be with our team to open the offices for them. This plan
entails minimum service disruptions.

It is expected that a detailed implementation plan with milestone will be

produced once an offer is given to us and forms part of the Project
Initiation Document which shall be signed off by both parties.

QUALITY PLANS AND CONTROL

Project personnel

Every project undertaken by Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd has a

designated quality assurance manager – the one person in charge of the
project quality. At Timelogic Enterprises(Pty) Ltd, the Operational
Manager is responsible for quality control and assurance as per the ISO
quality standards. As outline in her curriculum vitae, the operational
manager holds Master of Science in Strategic Management and ISO
9001:2008 – QMS and LEAD AUDIT. These are professional course
designed to insure delivery of quality service. As part of quality control,
Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd employees are qualified in their area of
expertise as outline in the accompanying educational credentials.

While the quality assurance manager has overall responsibility for the
quality of the project, all Timelogic Enterprises(Pty) Ltd employee are in-
house trained in quality management and continuous quality
improvement for the day-to-day field operations.

2. Quality Communications

During site hand over meeting, quality communication will be handed to

the client so that they will be able to also monitor the project progress
and quality. The quality communication will include ISO standards to be
followed, Clients specifications, proposed specifications from the supplier
(Timelogic Enterprises(Pty) Ltd) and DIT LAN standards. How the
project will be executed to conform to those standards. The
communication will also include duration of the project, scheduled
meeting and/or inspection reports intervals. Finally, it will have date of
hand over and expected test result so that the clients will be able to
verify if indeed the project complied to specifications.

3. Quality assurance surveillance

A big concern of many clients is what management will be doing to

monitor overall project quality and how they will make sure that the
project quality controls are running the way that they should.

With that in mind, the quality communications will have availed to the
client what to expect. In that regard the client will monitor to see if what
is outlined in the plan is being followed. This will usually give the client
some form of way to monitor the contractor to see if they are
conforming to the outlined quality processes. At Timelogic Enterprises
(Pty) Ltd, the project Manager will be monitoring project quality on a
weekly basis. This entails checking workmanship, checking that cables
length for LAN conform to standards. Testing of points and to check
working environment of the workers.

4. Subcontractors and suppliers.

Outside organizations play a huge role in supplying materials as we do

not produce the materials in our company. To insure that only quality
material are used, all the product are checked at supplier premises
before being purchased.

5. Project quality specifications

It goes without saying that Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd will comply
with customer’s specifications. However, in many cases, the customer
specifications do not outline which industry standards apply to the scope
of work. In that regard, we will be using DIT Cabling and LAN Standards
Document No.: GND002 and ISO/IEC 11801 standard as read with the
specification in the tender document. Cabling shall be documented and
recorded according to the TIA/EIA 606 standard or any current LAN
standard.

6. Inspections and tests.

A normal part of any cabling process is to inspect phases of work like

trunking, points and cable layout and to perform tests that verify
material quality and performance (connection and speed) and overall
system functionality.

7. Control of non-conformances

Everyone understands that from time to time things can go wrong in

projects. At Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, we have control measures in
place to ensure that any non-conformity is detected as soon as it occurs
or is anticipated and avoided. This includes regular meetings to discuss
project progress, inspections and testing during execution of the project.
In the event that a non-conformance is detected, it is investigated,
documented and corrective measures taken forthwith.

Typical nonconformance procedures include:

 Preventing cover-ups
 Corrective actions
 Records of the incident

8. Project completion inspections.

Once the project is completed, the final testing will be done with the
client representative and handed over.

DEMONSTRATE THE INDUSTRY NETWORK STANDARDS

As outline in the quality plan, Timelogic Enterprises (Pty) Ltd will adhere
to both international standards and the DIT standards to ensure that
there is seamless interoperability with legacy systems. This standards
are; The IEEE 802 family of standards maintained by the IEEE 802.
LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC). Since Ethernet cable
Category 6A will be used, the standard for Category 6A is ANSI/TIA-
568-C.1 and shall be followed. This standard dictates that in order for
the network to perform at frequencies up to 500 MHz—twice that of Cat
6e all the devices in the network must be complaint. Also the DIT LAN
standard Document No.: GND002 will be followed.
