Select Wiring Devices for Floor
and Ground Fault Interrupter

Introduction

Have you experienced touching on “grounded” washing machine,

refrigerator, microwave oven, electric stove, and other appliances or even
switches and connections? This can pose greater risk of being electrocuted in
wet floors or part of human body that touches on the grounded surface.
“Ground” or earth is the return point of excess current from a circuit. An
appliance can cause electrocution when not properly grounded. But even
most appliances have “ground” or “neutral wire”, danger and accident can
possibly happen even when you are taking extra care, such as when “hot
wire” accidentally touches into a metal or human body.
Control and protection devices are becoming primary concern with
regards to fire and electric shock hazard and safety at home. Ground Fault
Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) automatically shuts off the circuit when there is a
leakage to ground which protects lives from sudden electrocution, while
circuit breaker automatically shuts off the circuit when there are overheating,
short-circuit, and overloading in electronic appliances to prevent danger from
fire. These two have different function and technically, device standard like
voltage class, current rating, and types of device to be used. Also, different
parts of the house have different wiring device needed, because of locations
and conditions, like water from toilet and faucet in anyway and somehow
could touch into a ground and can be potentially danger and life-threatening
to others. That is why appropriate wiring device, such as switches, is
necessary in various locations especially in kitchen, toilet, garage, outdoors
and others.

Discussion

Selecting Wiring Devices for Floor and Ground Fault

Interrupter

Proper wiring devices for floor and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
(GFCI) are necessary to prevent fire and possible electrocution. These devices
serve as protection of both appliances/equipment and life. Various
appliances and equipment are usually plug into a receptacle or outlet which
have different voltage classification, current rating, types, and uses of device.
Prior knowledge about the wiring device in a circuit and appliances’ ratings
could be a safe ground.

Receptacle or Electrical outlet

6|Page
It is meant to power electrical appliances and equipment through an
opening or series of openings connected to a wired power source.  Electrical
outlets are usually installed in the wall, although they can also be installed
in the floor. It is sometimes found in the ceiling for powering devices such
as garage door openers or neon signs in storefront windows.

Common House Wiring Receptacle

1. 125 Volt Receptacle

2. 250 Volt Receptacles

Duplex Receptacles (3 wires):

The most common type of receptacle used in residential wiring is a
duplex receptacle rated for 15 amperes at 125 volts, but there is also 20A
at 250 volts. It consists of two single receptacles on the
same mounting strap. As many of these devices are
installed close to ground level, Tamper-
Resistant (T-R) receptacles are required in
some locations to protect children.

Note: Some receptacles are rated only for 15-

Amp circuits and some are 20-Amp circuits. 20-Amp electrical
receptacles may be designed to only accept plugs for 20-Amp appliances
(which may have a different plug-spade configuration in which one of the
plug terminals is twisted to be at 90 degrees to the other).

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a mechanical device
which will open the circuit and end the flow of electricity. In general,
GFCI devices are installed in any wet/damp environment, such as
kitchens and bathrooms, garage outlets, crawls spaces and unfinished
basements.

The GFCI breaks the electric power with an excess of 5 milliampere

within as little as 1/40 of a second. GFCI monitors the difference in
current flowing into the “hot” and out to the grounded neutral
conductors. The difference will flow back through any available path,
such as the equipment-grounding conductor, and through a person
holding the tool, if the person is in contact with a grounded object. It also
provides protection against fires, overheating and destruction of
insulation on wiring. They are also required in any outdoor application.
GFCI devices can be installed in any area of your home for added
protection.

Types of Grounded Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

Components Type Function
Receptacle This type of GFCI is used in
place of the standard duplex
receptacle found throughout
the house. It fits into the
standard outlet box and
protects you against "ground
faults” whenever an electrical
appliance is plugged into the
outlet. GFCI outlet could be
125-volt and/or 250 volts,
single-phase, 15- and 20-
ampere receptacles. It has a
test (black) and reset (red)
button.
Circuit In homes equipped with circuit
Breaker breakers rather than fuses, a
circuit breaker GFCI may be
installed in a panel box to give
8|Page
protection to selected circuits.
The circuit breaker GFCI serves
a dual purpose - not only will it
shut off electricity in the event
of a "ground-fault," but it will
also trip when a short circuit or
an over-load occurs. Protection
covers the wiring and each
outlet, lighting fixture, heater,
etc. served by the branch
circuit protected by the GFCI in
the panel box.
Portable Portable type GFCIs come in
several styles, all designed for
easy transport. Some are
designed to plug into existing
non-GFCI outlets, or connect
with a cord and plug
arrangement. The portable type
also incorporates a no-voltage
release device that will
disconnect power to the outlets
if any supply conductor is
open. Units approved for
outdoor use will be in
enclosures suitable for the
environment. If exposed to
rain, they must be listed as
waterproof.

Guide to select wiring devices

gratitude to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to
the successful preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and
distribution of the Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all
learning areas across grade levels as a response to providing the learners
with developmentally-appropriate, contextualized and simplified learning
resources with most essential learning competencies (MELCs)-based
activities anchored on the principles of guided learning and explicit
instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the

writers and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting
their best efforts to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the
implementation of learning delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout

evaluators making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for
having carefully evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to
DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly

extending its financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of
these learning resources for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close

coordination with the school heads, for their weekly distribution and
retrieval of the GLAKs and for their frequent monitoring of the learners’
progress through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the
learners the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish
the tasks and for gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would

not be possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to
serving our Zambaleño learners.

Again, our sincerest thanks!
