California Subject Matter Jurisdiction


a. In California, superior courts have unlimited SMJ, meaning they can hear any case that is not within the exclusive jurisdiction of another court. Superior courts
classify cases based on AIC. Superior courts have three jurisdictional classifications: (1) limited civil cases (AIC $25K or less, with restrictions on discovery,
equitable and declaratory relief), (2) unlimited civil cases (AIC exceeds $25K, with full pleadings, motions, discovery, equitable and declaratory relief), (3) small
claims (AIC $10K or less for individuals, and $5K or less for other litigants including businesses.
