What are cereals?
● Cereal is well known in the world as a
nourishing, nutritious, and delicious breakfast.

● Cereal is a type of grain and comes from crops

and grasses grown in different fields and farms
around the world. The grains are later
processed and divided into the different
cereals we know.

Cereals
The Origin Cereals
● Before cereals were created, working-class people
would commonly eat heavy food

● However, during the industrial revolution in the 19th

century, the need for easily digestible foods for
breakfast increased.

● To fix this problem, a religious conservative

vegetarian and wellness guru, Dr. John Harvey
Kellogg, created the first corn flakes.

● These corn flakes were made out of flour, oats,

and cornmeal, which were then baked and
(initially) smashed into pieces to make them
bite-sized.

1863
● In 1863 the first dry whole grain breakfast cereal was created by
James Caleb Jackson. It was called “Granula” and it was made
from dried and soaked in milk graham flour dough.
1877
● After this, surgeon at a health reform institute - John Harvey
Kellogg experimented to create better food for his patients.
● Kellogg baked the whole grains at high temperatures so that they
can be digested easier and become more healthy. He deemed
this process as “dextrinization”.
● He named his creation “Granola”.
1894
● In 1984, John and his brother, William, were experimenting with
different ingredients to create a better version of Granola
● The Kelloggs meant for their Granola to be healthy and very
bland for John’s patients. John Kellogg believed that “strong food
leads to sin”.
● However, in the process of that, they accidentally made a flaked
cereal we now know as corn flakes
The first branding of
Corn Flakes
1906
● After a conflict between the two Kellogg brothers, Will bought the
rights to the corn flake recipe in 1906
● With this recipe, Will created a company called “Battle Creek
Toasted Corn Flake Company” shortly after gaining the recipe
rights
● Will then started malt, sugar, and dough into the recipe
● With this new concoction, Will was able to produce this cereal in
mass quantities
1909
● By 1909, Will’s company had
produced 120,000 cases of
cornflakes a day
● After his success, his brother, John
Kellogg, resented his brother and
tried to gain the rights of his family's
name through legal action in court
(which John lost the case to)
1950s
● After WW2, cereal consumption
increased due to the fast-work ethic
of the industrial revolution
● Sugar was a big selling point in
cereals, which was great for the
Kellogg Company
● Kellogg’s “Frosted Flakes” became a
huge success, same with their
mascot, Tony the Tiger
