Basic concepts to be Defined:

The Teacher as an Organizational Leader
- Teachers are leaders all day. They lead by example in the way
they act, speak, and behave. They lead their students through
challenging activities and rigorous learning. Then, they take
on additional teacher leadership roles inside and outside the
classroom.

A. Define Leadership
 Leadership is the act of guiding a team or individual to achieve a
certain goal through direction and motivation. Leaders encourage
others to take the actions they need to succeed. To be a great leader,
it is necessary to learn and cultivate the skills it takes to be effective.

B. The Nature of Administrative Work

1. Trait Approach to Leadership
- This trait approach to leadership suggest that you must look a ceratin way in
order to be a leader. Today most of us are so quick to assume that good looking
people are nice, outgoing, and courage. That is what trait approach to
leadership is about.

2. Situations and Leadership

- In situational leadership, there are four leadership styles—directing, guiding,
supporting, and delegating. The situational leadership theory suggests that the
leadership style of the school principal should change as the readiness levels of
teachers to perform a specific task change.

3. Behaviors and Leadership

- Leadership behavior is the traits and actions that make an individual effective
as a leader. This behavior is the process by which a person can guide, direct
and influence the work of others to meet specific goals.

4. Leadership Effectiveness
- The successful exercise of personal influence by an individual, which
results in accomplishing one or several goals as a result of the
coordinated efforts of those who are led.

5. Contingency Models of Leadership

- The contingency theory of leadership supposes that a leader's effectiveness is
contingent on whether or not their leadership style suits a particular situation.
According to this theory, an individual can be an effective leader in one
circumstance and an ineffective leader in another one.

6. Fiedler's Contingency Model of Leadership

-states that there is not one best style of leadership. Rather, the most effective
leadership style for any given situation is one that aligns with the situation at
hand.

C. Transformational Leadership
1. Three Types of Leadership
 1. Individualized Consideration – the degree to which the leader
attends to each follower's needs, acts as a mentor or coach to the
follower and listens to the follower's concerns and needs.

 2. Intellectual Stimulation – the degree to which the leader challenges

assumptions, takes risks and solicits followers' ideas. Leaders with
this style stimulate and encourage creativity in their followers.

 3. Inspirational Motivation – the degree to which the leader articulates

a vision that is appealing and inspiring to followers. Leaders with
inspirational motivation challenge followers with high standards,
communicate optimism about future goals, and provide meaning for
the task at hand.

 4. Idealized Influence – Provides a role model for high ethical behavior,

instills pride, gains respect and trust. As a development tool,
transformational leadership has spread already in all sectors of
western societies, including governmental organizations.

2. Theory and Research about Transformational Leadership

 Transformational leadership is a model of leadership that relies on the
encouragement of a team to realize overall success. By raising a
team's morale and self-confidence, the team can then align itself to an
overall vision or common purpose. This purpose, however, must be
established early on for it to be effective.
 is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals
and social systems. In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive
change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into
leaders.

D. Evolutionary Leadership Theory (ELT)

 Evolutionary leadership theory (ELT) argues that humans possess
specialized psychological mechanisms for solving coordination
problems through leadership and followership. We discuss the
evolutionary functions and psychological processes underlying
leadership, and how to study leadership and followership from an
integrated evolutionary perspective.

E. Teacher Leadership

 It is a set of roles bundled with the motivation to inspire educational

change and move beyond the status quo in collaborative ways. Teacher
leaders lead alongside others, not from the front. They have their feet
firmly planted in the classroom and their eyes on what is possible for all.

 Example: Every school needs a cadre of teacher leaders. When

administrative leadership changes in a school, there should be a network
of teacher leadership that will sustain that change in a productive way.

1. School-based Management (SBM)
- School Improvement Plan (SIP)
is a roadmap that lays down specific interventions that a school, with
the help of the community and other stakeholders, will undertake
within a period of three consecutive school years.
