Steps in Solving Problems

There are several real-life problems involving systems of linear equations.

The following are the steps in solving the problems:
1. Read and analyze the problem carefully.
2. Each unknown quantity are represented by a variable.
3. Translate the verbal phrases/sentences into mathematical
statement/sentence.
4. Solve the systems of linear equations in two variables by
graphing.
5. Check the solution in the original conditions of the problem.

Example 1: The sum of two numbers is 5. Their difference is 1. Find the numbers.
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = be the number
y = the other number

Write two Equations.

Equation 1 x+y=5
Equation 2 x–y=1

6
Solve the system by graphing.
Find the x- and y – intercept of x + y = 5 to graph equation 1

(5, 0) (0, 5)
Graph equation 2 x–y=1
Find the x – and y – intercept of x – y = 1

(1, 0)
(0, -1)

Therefore, the value of a number is 3 and the other number is 2.

To check: 3 + 2 = 5 is correct, which is the sum of two numbers
3 – 2 = 1 is correct, which is the difference of two numbers.
Example 2: Find two positive numbers if one is three times the other, and their
difference is 8.
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = be one positive number
y = the other positive number

7
Write two Equations.

Solve the system by graphing.

Graph equation 1: x = 3y
In this example you cannot use the x – and y – intercept because the constant
is missing or the constant is equal to 0. So you need to assigned any number to x.
like x = 3 and x = 0 to both equations.
Equation 1
x=3 x=0
𝑥 = 3𝑦 𝑥 = 3𝑦
3 3𝑦 0 3𝑦
= =
3 3 3 3

1=𝑦 0=𝑦
(3, 1) (0, 0)

Graph equation 2: x – y = 8
Find the x – and y – intercept of x – y = 8
To find the x – intercept, let y = 0 To find the y – intercept, let x = 0
𝑥−𝑦 =8 𝑥−𝑦 =8
𝑥−0= 8 0−𝑦 =8
−𝑦 8
𝑥=8 = −1
−1

(8, 0) 𝑦 = −8 (0, -8)

8
Plot the points in the Cartesian coordinate plane.
Equation 1 the coordinates are (3, 1) and (0, 0)
Equation 2 the coordinates are (8, 0) and (0, -8)

To Check: Equation 1 Equation 2

x=3y x–y=8
12 = 3(4) 12 – 4 = 8
12 = 12 8=8
Therefore, the two positive numbers are 12 and 4.
Example 3
Kim is four years older than Ana. If the sum of their ages is 18, find their ages.
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = be the age of Ana
y = be the age of Kim

Write two Equations.

Equation 1: Kim is four year older than Ana
y=x+4
Equation 2: The sum of their ages is 18.
x + y = 18

9
Solve the system by graphing.
Find the x- and y – intercept of y = x + 4 to graph equation 1
To find the x – intercept, let y = 0 To find the y-intercept, let x = 0
y=x+4 y = x+ 4
0=x+4 y=0+4
0-4 = x y=4
-4 = x or x = -4 (0, 4)
(-4, 0)
Find the x – and y – intercept of x + y = 18
To find the x – intercept, let y = 0 To find the y-intercept, let x = 0
x + y = 18 x + y = 18
x + 0 = 18 0 + y = 18
x = 18 y = 18
(18, 0) (0, 18)

Graph the coordinates of the two equations.

Therefore, the age of Ana is 7

years old while the age of Kim
is 11 years old.

Example 4
Diana has an equal number of ₱1-peso coin and ₱5-peso coin in her pocket.
If the coins worth ₱18.00, how many of each coin does she have?
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = be number of ₱1-peso coin
y = be number of ₱5-peso coin

10
Write two Equations.
Equation 1: equal number of ₱1-peso coin and ₱5-peso coin
x=y
Equation 2: the coins worth ₱18.00
Coin Value Worth
x 1-peso x
y 5-peso 5y
x + 5y = 18
Solve the systems by graphing.
In this example we cannot use the x – and y – intercept because the constant
is missing or the constant is equal to 0. So we need to assigned any number to x.
Equation 1: x = y
x=0 x=3
0 = y or y = 0 x=y
(0, 0) 3 = y of y = 3
(3, 3)
Equation 2: x + 5y = 18
Find the x – and y – intercept of x + 5y = 18
To find the x – intercept, let y = 0 To find the y-intercept, let x = 0
x + 5y = 18 x + 5y = 18
x + 5(0) = 18 0 + 5y = 18
5y 18
x + 0 = 18 =
5 5
18
(18, 0) 𝑦= 5
18
(0, 5 )

Therefore, the number of 1-

peso coin and 5-peso coin is
3.

−2𝑥 + 80 = 60
−2𝑥 60−80
=
−2 −2
𝑥 = 10

3. Substitute this value of x in any of the two equations.

Using Equation 1 Using Equation 2
2x + y = 40 2x + 2y = 60
2(10) + y = 40 2(10) + 2y = 60
20 + y = 40 20 + 2y = 60
2𝑦 60−20
y = 40 - 20 =
2 2

y = 20 𝑦 = 20
4. Check if (10, 20) satisfies both of the original equations.
Equation 1 Equation 2
2x + y = 40 2x + 2y = 60
2(10) + 20 = 40 2(10) + 2(20) = 60
20 + 20 = 40 20 + 40 = 60
40 = 40 true 40 = 40 true
Therefore, the cost of a coffee is ₱10.00 and the cost of a sandwich is ₱20.00

Steps in Solving Problems

There are several real-life problems involving systems of linear equations.
The following are the steps in solving the problems:
1. Read and analyze the problem carefully.
2. Each unknown quantity are represented by a variable.
3. Translate the verbal phrases/sentences into mathematical
statement/sentence.
4. Solve the systems of linear equations in two variables by
elimination.
5. Check the solution in the original conditions of the problem.

Example 1: The sum of two number is 5 and their difference is 1. What are the
numbers
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = be the first number
y = be the second number

22
Write two Equations.
 The sum of two number is 5
Equation 1: x + y = 5
 their difference is 1
Equation 2: x – y = 1
Solve the systems by Elimination
1. By adding the equations, the variable y will be eliminated.

2𝑥 6
=2
2

Solve for x. 𝑥=3

2. solve for y by substituting 3 for x in either of the original equations
Using equation 1 Using equation 2
x+y=5 x–y=1
3+y=5 3–y=1
y=5–3 −𝑦 = 1 − 3
−y −2
y=2 = −1
−1

𝑦=2
3. Check if (3, 2) satisfies both of the original equations
Equation 1 Equation 2
x+y=5 x–y=1
3+2=5 3–2=1
5 = 5 true 1 = 1 true
Therefore, the two numbers are 3 and 1.

Example 2: Twice the smaller number added to larger number the result is 27. If the
smaller number subtracted from thrice of the larger number, the
difference is 25. Find the numbers.

23
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = smaller number
y = larger number
Write two Equations.
 Twice the smaller number added to larger number the result is 27.
Equation 1: y + 2x = 27
 If the smaller number subtracted from thrice of the larger number, the
difference is 25.
Equation 2: 3y – x = 25
Solve the systems by Elimination
1. Look for terms that can be eliminated. The equations do not have
any x or y terms with the same coefficients.
y + 2x = 27
3y – x = 25
2. Multiply the second equation by 2 so they do have the same
coefficient
y + 2x = 27
2(3y – x) = 2(25)
3. Rewrite the system and add the equations.

7𝑦 77
7
= 7
𝑦 = 11

4. solve for x by substituting 11 for y in either of the original equations

Using equation 1 Using equation 2
y + 2x = 27 3y – x = 25
11 + 2x = 27 3(11) – x = 25
2x = 27 - 11 33 − 𝑥 = 25
2𝑥 16
= −𝑥 = 25 − 33
2 2
−𝑥 −8
𝑥=8 = −1
−1
𝑥=8

24
5. Check if (8, 11) satisfies both of original equations.
Equation 1 Equation 2
y + 2x = 27 3y – x = 25
11 + 2(8) = 27 3(11) – 8 = 25
11 + 16 = 27 33 – 8 = 25
27 = 27 true 25 = 25 true
Therefore, the smaller number is 8 and the larger number is 11.

Example 3: The perimeter of rectangle is 12m. Twice the width is equal to the
length. Find the length and the width.
Solution:
Representation of the unknown.
Let x = length
y = width
Write two Equations.
 The perimeter of rectangle is 12m.
Note: P = 2l + 2w
Equation 1: 2x + 2y = 12
 Twice the width is equal to the length.
Equation 2: 2y = x

Solve the systems by Elimination

1. Rewrite equation 2 in standard form Ax + By = C
2y = x
-x + 2y = 0
2. Look for terms that can be eliminated. The equations do not have
any x or y terms with the same coefficients.
2x + 2y = 12
-x + 2y = 0
2. Multiply the second equation by 2 so they do have the same
coefficient
2x + 2y = 12
2(-x + 2y) = 2(0)
3. Rewrite the system, and add the equations.

6𝑦 12
=
6 6
𝑦=2

25
4. solve for x by substituting 2 for y in either of the original equations
Using equation 1 Using equation 2
2x + 2y = 12 2y = x
2x + 2(2) = 12 2(2) = x
2x + 4 = 12 4 = 𝑥 or 𝑥 = 4
2x = 12 - 4
2𝑥 8
=2
2
𝑥=4
3. Check if (4, 2) satisfies both of the original equations
Equation 1 Equation 2
2x + 2y = 12 2y = x
2(4) + 2(2) = 12 2(2) = 4
8 + 4 = 12 4 = 4 true
12 = 12 true
Therefore, the length of a rectangle is 4m and the width is 2m

Example 4: If it takes 3 hours for a motor boat to travel 72 km upstream and 2 hours
to travel 80km downstream, find the speed of the boat in still water and
the rate of the current.
Solution:
Let x = the rate of speed of the boat in still water.
y = rate of the current
rate time distance
Downstream x+y 2 80
Upstream x-y 3 72

Note: Distance = rate x time

The equations are:
(x + y) 2 = 80
(x – y) 3 = 72
Solving the system:
(𝑥+𝑦)2 80
= 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 40
2 2
(𝑥−𝑦)3 72
= 𝑥 − 𝑦 = 36
3 3
2𝑥 76
=
2 2
𝑥 = 38

26
Solving for y:
If x + y = 40 and x = 38, then
38 + y = 40
y = 40 – 38
y=2
The speed of the boat in still water is 38kph
The rate of the current is 2 kph
