Ultrasound Therapy
Ms. Justine Locsin
3. Electric shock (defective machine)—
 High-frequency current formed by terminate treatment and label the machine
longitudinal compression waves that cannot defective
be heard by the human ear
Precautions & Guidelines:
Effects of Ultrasound:
o Unhealed fracture sites
 Increase vasodilation o Osteoporosis
 Muscle relaxation
o Plastic / Metal implants
 Hyperemia
o Impaired circulation
 Increase collagen extensibility
 Decrease joint stiffness, pain, and muscle
spasm
 Promotes healing process Treatment should be discontinued:
 Analgesic
 Complete relief of symptoms and restoration
Indications of Ultrasound: of function
 No (+) results after 12-15 sessions
o Adhesions and contractures  Patient symptoms are exacerbated
immediately after the treatment
o Joint stiffness
o Pain
Treatment Considerations:
o Muscle spasm
o Spasticity (common in heel cords) o Position the patient comfortably
o Tendinitis o The area to be treated must be exposed,
o Synovitis supported, and relaxed
o Neuralgia / neuromas o Explain the rationale and sensation to be
felt during the treatment
Contraindications of Ultrasound: o Examine the area to be treated and check
for contraindications
o Impaired sensations o Apply the couplant in sufficient amount
o Pacemakers o Slow, smooth, and rhythmical pressure
o Pregnant uterus o Watch out for soreness and feedback must
o Tumors be obtained from the patient during
o Carotid sinus treatment
o Deep vein thrombosis / arterial disease o The patient should feel a strong sensation
o Hemophilia of warmth but no discomfort
o Growing end plates
o Vital areas: brain, spinal cord, eyes, heart, Parameters (Setting):
abdominal and reproductive organs
o 7 years old and below is not indicated  Motion: circular
because hypophyseal plate is still growing  2-3 seconds per cycle

 Intensity:
If abnormal sensations are present: o Acute: 0.1 – 0.5 w/cm
o Subacute: 0.5 – 1 w/cm
1. Sharp, stabbing, dull, aching pain— o Chronic: 1 – 2 w /cm
decrease the intensity of the ultrasound
 Mode of energy transfer is conversion
2. Slight burning, prickling, tingling,
stinging, and vibrating—add gel medium  Duration 5 minutes max 10

Sound head and patient’s hand should only be

around 2 cm
Crystal inside ultrasound head that produces
vibration = heat and passed through the tissues
and absorbed transformed to therapeutic effect

Coupling allows for transfer of energy
