04 Changing Subject of Formula (Solutions)
04 Changing Subject of Formula (Solutions)
04 Changing Subject of Formula (Solutions)
LEARNER OUTCOMES
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to
• change the subject of a formula
• find the value of an unknown in a formula
Given that area of a rectangle is A = lb where A is the area of rectangle, l its length and b its
breadth, we say that A is the subject of the formula.
If we need to find the length of rectangle given the dimensions for A and b, we will make l
the subject of the formula.
A = lb
A
∴l =
b
One useful application of change of formula is to find the value of an unknown.
Example 1
Make c the subject of the formula a (c − 3) = bc.
a (c − 3) = bc
ac − 3a = bc Step 1: Expansion
c (a − b) = 3a Step 3: Factorisation
Factorise using new subject as common factor
3a
c= Step 4: Isolation
a −b
Isolate new subject.
We can use the above procedure to make any variable the subject of a formula.
