Feed grain treatment by Formaldehyde against pathogen Salmonella sp

Introduction:
The food borne pathogens isolated from feeds, Salmonella sp have received the most attention
particularly with poultry feeds and feed ingredients and remain an issue for all aspects of
vertically integrated poultry operations. Salmonella-contaminated feed certainly has to be
considered a potential risk factor for salmonellosis.
Formaldehyde has been used extensively as a feed chemical antimicrobial to reduce Salmonella
and improve general bacterial hygiene in feeds. In general, potential cell targets of
formaldehyde include the spore cores of bacterial spores, the cell walls of bacteria, and the
amino groups of fungi.

Aim and objectives:

To check the efficacy of formaldehyde in feed grain treatment against Salmonella sp.

Equipment and chemicals:

 Petri dish
 Bio-safety cabinet
 Spreader
 Spirit lamp
 Culture of Salmonella sp
 SS Agar/Heckton enteric Agar
 Autoclave
 Incubator (37◦C)
 Formaldehyde (37%)

Plan of work:

 Isolation and culture cultivation of Salmonella Sp.

 Serial dilution of formaldehyde from 150mg/l to 200mg/lit.
 Minimum inhibitory concentration test by zone inhibition method.
