2
What’s In

As discussed in Lesson 21. of Module 2, a conditional sentence is one that

expresses an idea dependent on a condition. It consists of two parts: a condition clause
introduced by If and a result of the condition.

A condition clause, often called the if-clause may be found at the beginning of
the end of a conditional sentence. When it is placed at the beginning of a sentence, a
comma separates it from the main or result clause. When it is found at the end of the
sentence, no comma is required.

There are two kinds of condition clauses:

1. that which expresses a real or possible condition, and

2. that which expresses an unreal or impossible condition.
Refresh your knowledge by studying the chart below:

Present real or possible condition Past real or possible condition

If-clause Result clause If-clause Result clause
Present Tense (1)
Present Tense Future Tense Past Tense Past Tense (2)
Future Tense (3)
Example: If you helped me, I am grateful. (1)
If he wakes up he will not be If you came on time, I was not late. (2)
early, late.
If you said sorry, I will not be angry.

Notes to the Teacher

Review of the simple and perfect tenses is very important when discussing
conditional tenses. Students will find difficulty in comprehending conditional
tenses if they do not have knowledge on simple and perfect tenses.

What’s New

Reading Passage
Read the lyrics excerpt of Beyonce’s song, If I Were A Boy, and answer the questions
that follow. Write the letter of your answer in your notebook.

"If I Were A Boy"

If I were a boy
Even just for a day
I'd roll outta bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys
And chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted
And I'd never get confronted for it
'Cause they'd stick up for me

If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man
I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

But you're just a boy

You don't understand
Yeah, you don't understand, oh
How it feels to love a girl someday
You wish you were a better man
You don't listen to her
You don't care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
'Cause you've taken her for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

But you're just a boy!

In lesson 2.1 of Module 2, you learned about real or factual conditionals. In this
lesson, you will learn about unreal or counterfactual conditionals. Remember that
