Circle Theorems
Go through the notes then complete the quiz to test your knowledge

1) Angle at the centre

The angle at the centre is twice the angle at
the circumference (subtended/standing on the
same arc.)

2) Angles on the same arc

Angles at the circumference subtended by
(standing on) the same arc are equal.

3) Angles in a semicircle
Or angles standing on the diametre
Angles at the circumference subtended by
(standing on) a diameter are equal to 90º.

4) Cyclic quadrilaterals
A quadrilateral whose 4 vertices lie on the
circumference of a circle is called a
cyclic quadrilateral.
Opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral
add up to 180º.

5) Tangents to a circle
A tangent to a circle is always perpendicular
to a radius at the point of contact (90º angle).
Two tangents drawn from the same point are
equal in length.

6) Alternate segment
The angle between a tangent and a chord is
equal to the angle at the circumference in the
alternate segment subtended by the chord.

Definitions

Circle
A continuous locus of points in a plane that are
equidistance from a common point called the centre.

Radius
Radius of a circle is any of the line segments from its
centre to the Circumference of the circle.

Chord
Any line segment connecting two points on a curve.

Diameter

Any line segment connecting two points on a curve

and passes through the centre of the circle. The length
of a diameter is 2 times as long a radius.

Tangent
The line segment is a line that touches a single on the circumference of a circle.

Secant
A straight line that cuts a curve in two or more parts.

Segment
A segment is a piece of a circle it is formed by the region bounded by a chord and the arc of the circle.

Sector
A segment is a piece of a circle it is formed by the region bounded the arc and radii.
