Mission Statement
Band is a performance based activity that builds the following skills: teamwork,
musicianship, time management, relationship building, and many others. The band
program in Bethalto is dedicated to performing high quality music, supporting our peers,
and performing publicly at the highest possible level.

TMS Band Students

Band class will meet daily as an ENCORE class. Students will be graded on
classroom participation, attitude/behavior, playing assignments, listening journals,
vocabulary and rhythm tests, concert participation, and other assignments as the
director deems them necessary.

Students are expected to attend and perform at the following concerts:

Fall Concert with TMS + CM Choir - Tuesday, Oct. 18 (6:30pm - Call time TBA)
Christmas Concert with TMS Choir - Thursday, December 15 (7pm - Call time TBA)
Spring Concert with CM Bands - Monday, May 1 OR Monday, May 8 (6:30pm - Call

Instrumental Classroom Management

Behavioral Expectations

1. Respect the music-making process.

2. Respect all peers and teachers in the classroom.

3. Be on time and prepared for class and performances.

4. Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in the band room or during performances.

5. Do not use any electronic device unless given permission to do so from a

teacher.

Behavior Consequences

If the before mentioned behaviors are not followed, the following consequences
will be issued:

1st offense: Verbal warning

2nd offense: Loss of daily points

Meeting with student/phone call home

3rd offense: Loss of daily points

Office Referral

3
Grading
Daily Points: Every student receives five (5) daily points. They receive one (1) point for
having their instrument, one (1) point for having their music, one (1) point for having a
pencil on their music stand, and two (2) points for putting forth their best effort the
entire class period.

Playing Skills: All students are graded on their ability to play their instrument accurately
and read music correctly. This is a performance based class and mastery of playing skills
is necessary. Some playing assignments may include:

➔ Clapping and counting rhythms

➔ Performing rhythms on instruments
➔ Performing scales and arpeggios
➔ Performing designated sections from concert music
➔ Sight reading

Written Assignments: Some written assignments in the band room will include:

➔ Music theory worksheets/quizzes

➔ Vocabulary worksheets/quizzes
➔ Listening journals

Performance Participation: Each performance will be 100 points. Performances are all or
nothing - a student either attends the performance and receives all points or does not
attend the performance and does not receive points.

Playing tests will NEVER be a surprise. Students will always be told when a playing
test is coming up and reminded consistently about the quiz.

4
Absences

If a student is not feeling well from school, parents/guardians should communicate with
the secretaries about the absence. If a student is not feeling well on the day of a concert,
students should stay home and not attend school or the concert. Students will complete a
make-up assignment in this instance that will either include recording themselves playing
the concert music or a short paper. Performance absences will be handled on a
case-by-case basis.

Concert Attire

What do you see when you look at a football team, cheer squad, or basketball team? All
of the players are wearing the same uniform! In band, we follow the same expectatio.
However, we do not require all students to wear the exact same clothing, but the same
color: what we call CONCERT BLACK.

Ladies:

Option 1: Black blouse, black pants (not jeans or leggings), black dress shoes (low
heel, no open toe, NO Converse, Vans, etc.)

Option 2: Black blouse, black skirt (AT LEAST knee length), black tights/leggings
underneath the skirt, black dress shoes (low heel, no open toe, NO
Converse, Vans, etc.)

Option 3: Black dress (AT LEAST knee length, black tights/leggings underneath the

Private Lessons

There is nothing else I can think of which improves a student’s playing abilities
more than having private lessons. If your child is interested in taking lessons privately,
