Responsible Use Of Media
3 and Information
Media and other information providers play a central role in information and
communication processes. Nowadays, media become the common outlet of self-
expression and creativity. Its huge influence spreads speedily across the globe. The
connection between technological advances and people’s connectivity created a
huge impact on the lives of today’s generation. This module covers all the above-
mentioned concepts.

What’s In

Media and Information literacy recognizes the primary role of information and
media in our everyday lives. Empowerment of people through Media and
Information Literacy (MIL) is an important prerequisite for fostering equitable
access to information and knowledge and promoting free, independent and
pluralistic media and information systems. Media and Information Literacy is
compose of three main concepts: Media Literacy, Information Literacy and
Technology/Digital Literacy. Developing necessary skills and competencies in
regards with these concepts is an effective way to use and produce information
from the traditional and new media.

5
What is It

RESPONSIBLE USE OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION

We defined Digital Literacy/Technology Literacy as the ability of an individual,

either working independently or with others, to responsibly, appropriately, and
effectively use technological tools. This concept has something to do with issues
arising in the digital world today. With the growing trend in the use of technology,
cases of unethical use are also surging up. With this concern, ethical use of media
and information should be given great emphasis through inculcating Digital
citizenship starting with Digital access. Digital access refers to the ability to fully
participate in digital society. This includes access to tools and technologies, such
as the internet and computers, that allow for full participation.
Having full access to technology requires continuously developing norms of
appropriate, responsible, and empowered technology use which refers to Digital
Citizenship. Let’s take a look at the Nine elements of Digital Citizenship to
understand its content.

The elements (9 elements of digital citizenship) have also been organized under the
principles of respect, educate and protect. To fully grasp it, take a look on the

7
Digital citizenship also includes Digital Etiquette which pertains to electronic
standards of conduct or procedures and has to do with the process of thinking
about others when using digital devices. Recognizing Online Proper conduct is a
must and it has something to do with “Netiquette”.

Merriam- Webster dictionary defined Netiquette as set of rules about the proper
and polite way to communicate with other people when using the internet.
Common issues in the digital world such as bashing and online bullying occur due
to improper conduct online. As a responsible online user, the following core rules
should be taken into consideration;

8
To understand the ideas on the rules of netiquette, remember the following:
(Netiquette by Virginia Shea. (1990-2004))

Rule 1: Remember the Human

 Never forget that the person reading your mail or posting is, indeed, a
person, with feelings that can be hurt.
 Remember the golden rule “Do unto others as you’d have others do
unto you”.

Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
 Be ethical.
 Breaking the law is bad etiquette. Do your best to act within the laws
of society and cyberspace.

Rule 3: Know where you are in cyberspace.

 Netiquette varies from domain to domain. Remember that what may
perfectly acceptable in one area may be dreadfully rude in another.
 Lurk before you leap. When you enter a domain of cyberspace that’s
new to you, take a look around. Spend a while listening to the chat or
reading the archives. Get a sense of how the people who are already
there act. Then go ahead and participate.

Rule 4: Respect other people's time and bandwidth.

 Don’t waste expert reader’s time by posting basic information.
 It’s Ok to think that what you’re doing at the moment is the most
important thing in the universe, but don’t expect anyone else to agree
with you.

Rule 5: Make yourself look good online.

 Check grammar and spelling before you post.
 Know what you’re talking about and make sense.
 Don’t post flame- bait.

Rule 6: Share expert knowledge.

 Offer answers and help to people who ask questions on discussion
groups.
 If you’ve received email answers to a posted question, summarize
them and post the summary to the discussion group.

Rule 7: Help keep flame wars under control.

 Don’t respond to flame-bait.
 Don’t post spelling or grammar flames.
 If you’ve posted flame-bait or perpetuated a flame war, apologize.

Rule 8: Respect other people's privacy.

 Don’t read other people’s private email.

9
Rule 9: Don't abuse your power.
 The more power you have, the more important it is that you use
it well.

Rule 10: Be forgiving of other people's mistakes.

 Everyone was a network newbie once.
 When someone makes mistake- whether it’s a spelling error or
spelling flame or an unnecessary long answer- be kind about it.
 Give people the benefit of the doubt; assume they just don’t
know any better. And never be arrogant or self-righteous about
it.

Learning is never ending, the more information we have, the more we seek for more.
With the birth of technology, access to information comes at the tip of our fingers.
However, despite of the leisure technology offers, people tend to abuse it resulting
to human conflict. Proper online conduct is a must every time in contact with the
digital world to avoid unpleasant situations.
