WEATHER INSTRUMENTS
I. Introductory Concept
Almost everyday we check the condition of our weather to make sure that
there is no existing or upcoming weather disturbance. The weather condition is
monitored and checked regularly by a meteorologist. A meteorologist is
a specialized scientist who focuses on some aspect of the atmosphere, and who
uses scientific principles to observe, understand and be able to explain or
forecast how the earth's atmosphere affects the earth and everyone on it. A
meteorologist uses different weather instruments to check the weather condition
at all times.

Weather instruments like a barometer, an anemometer, a wind vane, a

wind chart, a thermometer and a rain gauge all help the meteorologists to gather
important information about the weather.

A barometer is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air pressure in

a certain environment. Pressure tendency can forecast short term changes in the
weather. Many measurements of air pressure are used within surface weather
analysis to help find surface troughs, pressure systems and frontal boundaries.

A thermometer is an instrument used for measuring air temperature. It may

bear a Fahrenheit or Celsius scale, or both. Air temperature is read in degrees
Fahrenheit or ˚F and degrees Celsius or ˚C.

A wind vane is a device that tells the direction of the wind or where the
wind blows. The four letters E, W, N, and S represent the four directions: East, West,
North and South.

The speed of the wind may be fast or slow. Sometimes it blows gently but
at other times it blows fast. An anemometer is used to measure the wind speed.

A rain gauge is an instrument used for collecting and determining the

amount of rain which fall.
A hygrometer is an instrument used to measure the amount of water vapor
in air, in soil, or in confined spaces.

Weather charts tell about weather components that determine the

weather condition at any given time. The daily weather report will help you know
the weather condition. Weather report is important. We should give accurate
data on air temperature, wind speed and direction and the sky condition.

What Makes Weather?

There are six main components, or parts, of weather. They are temperature,
atmospheric pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, and cloudiness. Together,
these components describe the weather at any given time.

II. Learning Skills/ Competency

Use weather instruments and describe the different weather components in
a weather chart. (S4RS-IVb-2)
