I. MEASUREMENT AND CONVERSION

1.) A four-year-old child has a temperature of 38.7°C. Since high fevers cause convulsions in children, it is
recommended that phenobarbital be given if the temperature exceeds 101°F.
Given: T(°C) = 38.7°C Required: To solve for the equivalent T(°F) of the
temperature of the four-year-old child which is 38.70C.
Solution:

𝑇(°F) = (𝑇(°C) ×
9
) + 32 Conclusion: Therefore, the child must take the
5
anticonvulsant (phenobarbital) since his
= (38.70C ×
9
) + 32 temperature is 101. 66°F.
5

𝑇(°F) = 101. 66°F

2.) Hot compresses are being prepared for a patient. The water is heated to 145 0F. What is the temperature of
water in 0C and K?
Given: T(°F) = 145°F Required: T(°C) =?

T(K) =?
Solution:
*Fahrenheit to Celsius *Fahrenheit to Kelvin
5 5
𝑇(°C) = (𝑇(°F) − 32)( ) 𝑇(K) = (𝑇(°F) − 32)( ) + 273.15
9 9

5 5
= (1450F −32)( ) = [(1450F −32)( )]+ 273.15
9 9

𝑇(°C) = 62.78°C 𝑇(K) = 335.93K

Conclusion: Therefore, the temperature of the water in 0C and K are 62.780C and 335.93K respectively.

3.) On the planet Mercury, the average night time temperature is 13K, and the average day time temperature is
683 K. What is the corresponding Fahrenheit and Celsius temperatures?
Given: T(K (night time)) = 13K Required: T(°C) =?

T(K (day time)) = 683K T(°F) =?

Solution:
DAY TIME
*Kelvin to Celsius *Kelvin to Fahrenheit
9
𝑇(°C) = 𝑇(K) − 273.15 𝑇(°F) = [(𝑇(𝐾) − 273.15)( )] + 32
5

9
= (683K − 273.15) = [683𝐾 − 273.15)( )] + 32
5

𝑇(°C) = 409.85°C 𝑇(°F) = 769.73°F

NIGHT TIME
*Kelvin to Celsius *Kelvin to Fahrenheit
9
𝑇(°C) = 𝑇(K) − 273.15 𝑇(°F) = [(𝑇(𝐾) − 273.15)( )] + 32
5

9
= (13K − 273.15) = [13𝐾 − 273.15)( )] + 32
5

𝑇(°C) = − 260.15°C 𝑇(°F) = −436.27°F

Conclusion: Therefore, the average day time temperature on planet Mars in °C and °F are 409.85°C and
769.73°F respectively. While, the average night time temperature in °C and °F are − 260.15°C and −436.27°F
respectively.

4.) An aquarium tank unit requires 75,000 ml of distilled water. How many liters of distilled water must be
used?
Given: amount of distilled water aquarium tank = 75,000 ml
Required: To solve for the equivalent amount
of distilled water required in the aquarium tank
Solution:
1𝐿 in liters (L).
75,000 𝑚𝑙 × = 75 L
1000𝑚𝑙

Conclusion: Therefore, the amount of distilled water (in liters) that must be used is 75 L.

5.) Convert each of the following length measurements to its equivalent in

a. meters
b. feet
c. yard

i. 1.1 cm = 0.011 m = 0.036 ft = 0.012 yd

ii. 76.2 km = 76,200 m = 250,000 ft = 83,333.33 yd
iii. 2.5 km = 2,500 m = 8,202.10 ft = 2,734.03 yd

Solution:
1𝑚 1𝑓𝑡 1𝑦𝑑
i). 1.1 𝑐𝑚 × = 0.011 𝑚 × = 0.036𝑓𝑡 × = 0.012𝑦𝑑
100𝑐𝑚 0.3048𝑚 3𝑓𝑡
1𝑚 1𝑓𝑡 1𝑦𝑑
ii.) 76.2𝑘𝑚 × = 76,200 𝑚 × = 250,000𝑓𝑡 × = 83,333.33𝑦𝑑
0.001𝑘𝑚 0.3048𝑚 3𝑓𝑡
1𝑚 1𝑓𝑡 1𝑦𝑑
iii.) 2.5𝑘𝑚 × = 2,500 𝑚 × = 8,202.10𝑓𝑡 × = 2,734.03𝑦𝑑
0.001𝑘𝑚 0.3048𝑚 3𝑓𝑡
