Learning Task #2. Some Mathematical Concepts in Physics Teaching
I. Measurement and Conversion

1. A four year-old child has a temperature of 38.70C. Since high fevers cause
convulsions in children, it is recommended that phenobarbital be given if
the temperature exceeds 1010F.
Given:
°C = 38.7
°F = ?

Solution:

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
°F = (38.7°C × 9/5) + 32
°F = 101.66

2. Hot compresses are being prepared for a patient. The water is heated to
1450F. What is the temperature of water in 0C and K?

Given: 1450F
Problem: 1450F = ____ 0C = _____ K

Solution 1: 1450F = ____ 0C

(0F - 32) x 5/9 = 0C

(145°F − 32) × 5/9 = 62.778°C

Solution 2: 1450F = ____ K

(0F - 32) x 5/9 + 273.15 = K
(145°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 = 335.928K
3. On the planet Mercury, the average night time temperature is 13K, and the
average day time temperature is 683 K. What are the corresponding
Fahrenheit and Celsius temperatures?
Kelvin to°F : (K-273.15) x 9/5 +32 = °F

(13K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32 = -436.3°F

(683K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32 = 769.73°F
The average night time temperature on planet Mercury in degree Fahrenheit is -436.3
and its average day time temperature in degree Fahrenheit is 769.73.
Kelvin to Celsius: K – 273.15 = °C

13K − 273.15 = -260.1°C

683K − 273.15 = 409.85°C
The average night time temperature on planet Mercury in degree Celsius is -260.1 and
its average day time temperature in degree Celsius is 409.85.

4. An aquarium tank unit requires 75,000 ml of distilled water. How many liters of
distilled water must be used?
Given: 75,000ml = ? L

Solution: 1L = 1000ml

5. convert each of the following length measurements to its equivalent in

a. meters,
b. feet,
c. yard

i. 1.1 cm = 0.011 m ;0.036 ft; 0.012 yd

ii. 76.2 km = 76,200 m ; 250,000 ft; 83,333.33 yd
iii. 2.5 km = 2,500 m ; 8,202.1 ft; 2734.03yd
II. Exponents
1. (3.76 x 105 )+ (1.75 x 104 ) = 3.935 x 105
2. (1.25 x 103) (1.64 x 102 ) = 2.05 x 105
3. (2.05 x 105) / (1.25 x 102 ) = 1.64 x 103
III. Vector Algebra
Given:

𝐴⃗ = 3𝑥̂ − 2𝑦̂
⃗⃗ = 𝑥̂ − 3𝑦̂
𝐵

Find:

1) 𝐴⃗ + 𝐵
⃗⃗ 2) 𝐴⃗ − 𝐵
⃗⃗ 3) |𝐴⃗ + 𝐵
⃗⃗|
4) 3𝐴⃗ + 2𝐵
⃗⃗ 5) 𝐴⃗ ∙ 𝐵
⃗⃗ 6) 𝐴⃗ × 𝐵
