I. INTRODUCTION

Indonesia is an archipelagic country. Indonesia is an archipelagic country that has a

diversity of cultures, races, ethnicities, beliefs, religions, and languages. Even though it has

cultural diversity, Indonesia is still one. The diversity that exists in Indonesia is the wealth and

beauty of the Indonesian nation. For this reason, the government will continue to encourage

diversity to become a force to be able to realize national unity and integrity towards a better

Indonesia.

As said above, Indonesia has a lot of diversity, including the language used. Each region

also has its own language. It is known that in Indonesia there are 718 types of languages.

However, this does not prevent each region from communicating because Indonesia has a

unifying language or national language "Bahasa Indonesia." So even though the language of each

region is different, communication between regions can still be well established. We can still get

information from each other, increase knowledge, and help in communicating.

` According to Henry Sweet, language is the expression of ideas by means of speech

sounds combined into words, and then sentences, and those combinations answering to that of

ideas into thoughts. Meanwhile, Chomsky said that language is a component of the human mind,

physically represented in the brain and part of the biological endowment of the species.
Others than the different languages in each region, it turns out that the dialect used is also

different. Dialect in the language is the embodiment of the differences that become a group's

identity. Sardiyah (2020) states that dialect is a type of language spoken by a small number of

people in a certain location. Dialect differences can be caused by differences in regional origin

and differences in social status. Dialects that are normally found in the speech community may

be in the forms of regional dialect and social dialect (Budiarsa).

West Sumatra also has a regional language "Bahasa Minang." Each region in West

Sumatra also has a different dialect, the dialect of the Batusangkar people is different from the

dialect of the Padang Ganting people. Dialects can be recognized by the vocabulary they use as

well as how they are pronounced.

II. METHOD

The qualitative descriptive method was applied in this study. The study was carried out in

Padang Ganting, where the Padang Ganting dialect is spoken by the majority of the population.

This study was carried out by interviewing some local people and observing local community

interactions and comparing the usage of language among the citizens of West Sumatra.

III. FINDINGS

This is an example of Minangkabau language, how the sound /ar/ change into /egh/ as

Padang Ganting village accent.

Padang Ganting accent Batusangkar accent

- [putar]  /putegh/ /puta/

- [ular]  /ulegh/ /ula/

- [lingkar]  /lingkegh/ /lingka/

- [ambar]  /ambegh/ /amba/

- [lebar]  /lebegh/ /leba/

- [bakar]  /bakegh/ /baka/

- [dasar]  /dasegh/ /dasa/

 /ir/ change into /igh/

Padang Ganting accent Batusangkar accent

- [air]  /aigh/ /ai/

- [banjir]  /banjigh/ /banjia/

- [anyir]  /anyigh/ /anyia/

- [zikir]  /zikigh/ /zikia/

- [cibir]  /cibigh/ /cibia/

Another example can be taken from Minangkabau language.

Padang Ganting accent Batusangkar accent

- [mana]  /mano/ /ma/

- [siapa]  /siapo/ /sia/

- [apa]  /apo/ /a/

- [mengapa]  /mengapo/ /manga/

IV. CONCLUSIONS

Based on the findings above, we can see clearly that there are differences in the dialect that has

been used by the Padang ganting community and Batusangkar community. This proves that

every region has its dialect. This can happen by many factors. However, the existing differences

do not become an obstacle for the people to be able to communicate with each other. We have

“Indonesian” as our national language. With this, we still can communicate with people from

other regions. The number of dialects spoken in Indonesia does not prevent citizens and society

from communicating with one another. With the difference in dialect, we can tell where the

speaker comes from.
