Gay-Lussac’s Law

Are you familiar with pressure cooker? The pressure cooker is airtight, so the pressure builds up inside
it as the liquid inside comes to boil. The resulting trapped steam causes the internal temperature to rise more
than the normal atmospheric pressure. Thus, the cooking of hard meat and fiber is done at a short period of time.
Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac is credited with the determination of the temperature-pressure relationship
in gases at constant volume. He deduced that the pressure of the gas is directly proportional to its
temperature. This means that when the temperature of the gas increases its pressure also increases or vice
versa.
Mathematically, Gay-Lussac’s Law is expressed as: P α T at constant Volume
It can also be written as: P = k T or k = P / T

Considering the initial conditions, P1 / T1 = k and final conditions, P2 / T2 = k then P1 / T1 = P2 / T2

Note: To convert oC to K, use this formula: K = oC + 273

EXAMPLE:
The pressure of a nitrogen gas inside a rigid tank is 1.5 atmosphere at 30oC. What will be the resulting
pressure if the tank is cooled to 0oC?
Given: P1 = 1.5 atm Solving: P1 / T1 = P2 / T2 Analysis:
o
T1 = 30 C = 303 K P2 = P1 T2 / T1 P1 = 1.5 atm; P2 = 1.35 atm (decreasing)
T2 = 0oC = 273 K P2 = (1.5 atm) (273 K)
Find : P2 = ? (303 K) T1 = 303 K; T2 = 273 K (decreasing)
Convert temperature: P2 = 409.5 atm
K = oC + 273 K = oC + 273 303 Therefore:
K = 30 + 273 K = 0 + 273 P2 = 1.35 atm Pressure and temperature are
K = 303 K K = 273 K directly proportional.
