WEEK-1

Practice quiz on Sets

1.
Question 1

Let A = \{1,3,5\}A={1,3,5}. Is the following statement: 3 \in A.3∈A. True or false?

The symbol \in∈ stands for “is an element of” and it is true that 33 is an element of AA. The other
two elements of AA are 11 and 55.

2.
Question 2

Let E = \{-1, -2, -3\}E={−1,−2,−3}. Compute the cardinality |E|∣E∣ of EE: 3

Recall that the cardinality of a set is the number of elements in it. Since EE has three elements
(which are −1−1, −2−2, −3−3), the cardinality of EE is |E|∣E∣ = 3.=3.

3.
Question 3

Let A = \{1, 3, 5\}A={1,3,5} and B = \{3, 5, 10, 11, 14\}B={3,5,10,11,14}. 3,5

The intersection of two sets consists precisely of the elements they share in common. The elements 3
and 5 are in both AA and BB.
