Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any work of the
Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the government agency or office wherein
the work is created shall be necessary for the exploitation of such work for a profit. Such agency
or office may, among other things, impose as a condition the payment of royalties.
Borrowed materials (e.g., songs, stories, poems, pictures, photos, brand names, trademarks, etc.)
included in the activity sheets are owned by their respective copyright holders. Every effort has
been exerted to locate and seek permission to use these materials from the respective copyright
owners. The authors do not represent nor claim ownership over them.
An area with high biodiversity has the greatest number of species living in it. Example of
this is the tropical rainforest ecosystem (refer to figure 1) which serve to trap rainwater that
flows into rivers and streams. Many plants abound in forests that provides shelter, water and food
to many species that can survive drought or disasters as well as competition with other species
results to a stable ecosystem with smaller rate of species loss. It also minimizes soil erosion,
landslides and floods. They are sources of crops, that may resist pests and diseases or produce
more harvest and chemicals that can be made into medicines. An area with low biodiversity has
lesser number of organisms living in it. Low biodiversity can lead to species extinction. This
includes overexploitation, habitat destruction, environmental conditions like climate change,
global warming, pollution and competition due to limited resources. Example of low biodiversity is
desert ecosystem (refer to figure 2).
The biodiversity of an ecosystem contributes to the sustainability of that ecosystem. If an
ecosystem has higher biodiversity, the more sustainable it is. Conversely, lower biodiversity equals
less sustainability.
