A supercomputer that will be among the top 10 in the world will be built in Korea as well.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced on the 22nd that the national ultra-high
performance computer unit 6 construction and operation plan has passed a preliminary feasibility study, and
the project will be promoted in earnest.
The government plans to invest a budget of 293 billion won to complete the construction of Supercom Unit 6
with theoretical performance of 600 petaflops (PF) or higher.
One petaflop means 1000 trillion operations per second. Therefore, Supercom Unit 6 will have the ability to
process 60 calculations per second.
This is about 23 times faster than the theoretical performance of 25.7 petaflops of the Supercom No. 5 Nurion
currently operated by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KIST). It is also faster than the
Fugaku (theoretical performance 537 petaflops) of the Japan Institute of Physics and Chemistry, which
currently ranks second in the world's supercomputer performance.

At the '2022 International Supercomputing Conference' held in Hamburg, Germany at the end of May, the
Supercomputer Frontier of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US ranked first in the world with 1.102
exaflops (1 exa = 100) of calculations per second based on actual measurement performance .

Considering that countries around the world are improving the performance of supercoms one after another,
the government predicted that Korean Supercom Unit 6 would rank 5th to 10th in the world by 2024.

Ahn Hee-nam, head of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “All of the processing units in Supercom Unit 5
were CPU-based, but in consideration of the recent growing demand for big data analysis and artificial
intelligence training, we plan to add GPU units to Unit 6 as well.” According to the Ministry of Science and ICT,
Unit 5, built in 2018, has reached an overload state with an average use rate of 77% and a maximum of 90% for
the past year, making it difficult to respond to new demand.
Currently, there are six Korean supercomputers in the top 500 supercomputers in the world. The SSC-21,
installed by Samsung Electronics at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology in 2021 for research on
semiconductors and artificial intelligence, is ranked 15th and is the highest. The Korea Meteorological
Administration’s Guru and Maru ranked 31st to 32nd, Kistie’s Nurion ranked 42nd, SK Telecom’s Titan installed
for interactive AI development this year ranked 85th, and Samsung Electronics’ SSC-21 Scalable Module
ranked 315th. it was Supercom rankings are published in May and November each year.
