AKUTECH: The Genesis of Akwa Ibom State University

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) was initially established as Akwa Ibom State University of
Technology (AKUTECH). On October 18, 2000, Governor Victor Attah, as he then was, inaugurated a
committee for the establishment of Akwa Ibom State University of Technology (AKUTECH). The
committee was made up of Prof. Ephraim E. Okon, Prof. Ekong E. Ekong, Prof. Ulo K. Enyenihi, Prof.
Reuben K. Udo, Prof. E. W. Mbipom, Engr. (Mrs.) Mayen Adetiba, Engr. Esio O. Mboho, Engr. Akpan U.
Ukpoho, Engr. Uyai Ekaette, Dr. Usen J. Antia, Sir Pius Wilson, Dr. Engineer Linus Asuquo, Mr. Moses
Essien, Dr. Ini Udoka, Prof. Joe Uyanga and Mr. E. J. Akpan.

The Bill for the establishment was signed into law by the then Executive Governor of the State, Arc
(Obong) Victor Attah on 16th April, 2003 and in 2005, Prof. Akpan Hogan Ekpo was appointed the
pioneer Vice- chancellor of the Akwa Ibom State University of Technology.

The University had the mandate to produce manpower which would rapidly facilitate the transformation
of the State into an industrial society and a technologically-driven economy.

AKSU: Multi-campus institution passed into Law

In order to meet the aspirations of the totality of Akwa Ibomites, the goals of the university was
modified in order to transform the university into a Multi-campus institution whose focus is not just
Technology and Applied Science but also Arts, Agricultural, Social and Management Science.

This policy thrust of the Government led to the establishment of a conventional, multi-campus
university, with the name changed from Akwa Ibom State University of Technology (AKUTECH) to Akwa
Ibom State University (AKSU), in May, 2008 with the main campus at Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin L.G.A
and a second campus at Obio Akpa, Oruk Anam L.G.A.The Bill formally establishing Akwa Ibom State
University was thereafter signed into law by His Excellency, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio, with effect
from June 2009 and Prof. Sunday Peters was appointed the substantive Vice-Chancellor with effect from
1st January, 2010.

The University opened its doors to its pioneer students in the 2010/2011 academic year.
