II. EXPLANATION
Brief Introduction
This is an introductory activity about sets. A clear understanding of the
concepts in this activity will help you easily grasp number properties and enable
you to quickly identify multiple solutions involving sets of numbers.

Learning Competency to be developed

The Learner illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set, and
cardinality of sets, union and intersection of sets and the difference of two sets.

Objectives:
1. Define sets, subsets, universal sets, null set and cardinality of sets.
2. Determine the subsets and cardinality of a given set.
3. Define union of sets, intersection of sets, and difference of two sets.
4. Find the union, intersection and difference of two sets.

A. Let’s Recall

Group and label each of the following objects below.

Answer the following questions:

a. How many groups are there? ______

b. Does each object belong to a group? _______
c. Is there an object that belongs to more than one group?
______Which one?______
The groups are called sets for as long as the objects in the group share a
characteristic and are thus, well defined.

B. Let’s Understand
Direction: Read the problem below and provide your answer for what is
asked. Write your answer on the space provided.

Consider the set consisting of whole numbers from 1 to 100. Let this be
set U. Form smaller sets consisting the elements of U that share a
different characteristic. For example, let A be the set of all numbers that
are divisible by 5 from 1 to 100.

A. Form three more of such sets.

1.) ______________________________________
2.) ______________________________________
3.) ______________________________________
B. How many elements are there in each of these sets you have
formed?
Set 1: _______
Set 2: _______
Set 3: _______
C. Does every set have a common element/s from the other set?
_________________________________________
D. Did you think of a set with no element?
_________________________________________

C. Let’s Explain
What is a Set? Well, simply put, it's a collection.
Example:

The items you wear: hat, shirt,

jacket, pants, and so on.

This is known as a Set.

Or another example is types of fingers.

This set includes index, middle, ring, and pinky .

So it is just things grouped together with a certain property in common.

We simply list each element (or "member") separated by a comma, and then put
some curly brackets around the whole thing:

The curly brackets { } are sometimes called "set brackets" or "braces

Normally, sets are denoted by capital letters. Here are some examples
of set.

A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
B = {1, 3, 5, ... }
C = {l, o, v, e}
D = {x/x is a number greater than 8}

Can you give now 2 examples of well- defined sets?

1. _____________________________________(roster method)
2. _____________________________________(rule method)
Let us consider the following definitions which will be very useful in the
succeeding activities.

When we define a set, if we take pieces of that set, we can form what
is called a subset.

Example:

Let S = {1, 2} list all the subsets of S.

The subsets of S are: {1}, {2}, {1,2},
Total number of subsets: 4

Try this:

Let A = {1, 2, 3}
What are the subsets of A: ___________________

What is the total number subset of set A: _________

At the start we used the word "things" in quotes.

We call this the universal set. It's a set that contains everything.

Denoted by U is the set of all possible elements used in a problem.

Example:
Let us say, there are three sets named as A, B and C. The
elements of all set A, B and C is defined as;

A = {1, 3, 6, 8}

B = {2, 3, 4, 5}

C = {5, 8, 9}

Find the universal set for all the three sets A, B and C.

U = {___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___}

There are some sets that do not contain any element at all.
The set of months with 32 days. We call a set with no
Example:
elements the null or empty set.

A null set or empty set is a set with no element or elements in it. It is

denoted by { } or .

The number of elements in a set is the Cardinality of that set.

The cardinality of a set A is written as n(A).

Example:

Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and B = {2, 4, 6, 8}.

a. What is the cardinality of set A? ______
b. What is the cardinality of set B? ______

The following definitions will help us in this lesson.

The Union of two sets A and B, which is denoted by A U B (read as"

A union B"), means the set whose elements are the elements found in
A or in B or in both A and B.

Look at the example below.

Let A = { , } and B = { , }
a. What are the elements of set A? ________
b. What are the elements of set B? ________
c. Then, what is A U B? = _____________
What did you notice in the union of two given sets with no common element?
____________________________________________.

Suppose E = {c, a, r} and F= {r, i, n, g}, then what is E U F? _______

The Intersection of two sets A and B which is denoted by A ∩ B,

(read as A intersection B ) means the set of elements or elements
found both in A and B.

Look at the example below.

Let A = { , , } and B = { , }
Is there an element common found in set A and B? ______
a. Then what is A ∩ B? ________
How about if you are given,
K = {3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 } and
L = {5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 },
b. Then what is K ∩ L? ________________

Difference of two sets A and B. The difference of A and B denoted by

A - B is defined as the set whose elements are in A but not in B.

Look at the example below.

Suppose, A = {n, i, c, e, l, y} and

B = {I, 0, v, e, l, y}
Then what is A – B? _____________________

How about if, E = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 } and

F = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}
What is F – E? _________________________
