History of Xuan Kong

Given China’s millennia-old history, you might be surprised to know that detailed research
and documentation on Xuan Kong could only be traced to the mid-17th century. Prior to the
1640s, the history of Xuan Kong’s lineage could be best described as obscure.
But there were records traced to the time of the Jin Dynasty 晉朝(265 - 420 AD) that mentioned
that a disciple by the name of Guo Pu (276-324 AD) had begun passing down a form of
knowledge that bore a certain resemblance to Xuan Kong. During the era of the Tang Dynasty,
Yang Jun Song authored the Qing Nang Ao Yu (The Profound Sayings of the Azure Bag),
which stipulated – amongst other things – that “...the intercourse of...male (Yang) and female
(Yin) come together in Xuan Kong” and one should also “...look to Wu Xing 五行 (the Five
Elements) to understand Xuan Kong.” This perhaps, established one of the earliest principles
of Xuan Kong, where the outcome of things are determined by the interaction between Yin
and Yang and the Five Elements of Wood, Earth, Fire, Water and Metal.
As time went by, these cumulated tenets and precepts came into the possession of Jiang
Da Hong 蔣大鴻, who lived towards the final days of the Ming Dynasty 明朝 (1368-1644).
2 Giving credit where it’s due, it was Grandmaster Jiang who immersed himself thoroughly into
studying and deciphering the many complexities surrounding Xuan Kong – and revolutionizing
it to serve the needs of mankind. It’s therefore unsurprising that Grandmaster Jiang is widely
regarded as the forefather of Xuan Kong knowledge!

The 6 Major Schools of Xuan Kong
Towards the early days of the Qing Dynasty, 6 major Xuan Kong schools emerged.
They were:
1. Wu Chang Pai 無常派 (founded by Zhang Zhong Shan)

2. Dian Nan Pai 滇南派
3. Su Zhou Pai 蘇州派 (founded by Xu Di Hui)
4. Shang Yu Pai 上虞派
5. Xiang Chu Pai 湘楚派 (founded by Yin You Ben)
6. Guang Dong Pai 廣東派 (founded by Cai Min Shan)

The Five Elements are used to symbolically represent Qi and should not be taken in
a literal sense. In BaZi, they are used to represent certain key attributes in a person’s
BaZi chart.

In the practice of Classical Feng Shui, Direction and Location
are the two of the most important factors to consider.
Before you apply any Feng Shui system, you must first start
by taking the correct direction.
What To Do:
1. Stand about one or two feet outside the door.
Door Facing vs Building Facing
Door Facing is used to determine what direction a door

or main door is facing. The facing direction of the Door or
8 Main Door does not necessarily be the same as the facing
direction of the Building.
Building Facing is used to establish the North-South

axis of a building or property. The facing direction of the
Building refers to the façade of the property that is defined
as the part or side where the property was built to face -
its obvious architectural frontage.

2. Determine the Façade (Building Direction) of a

Property
1. Determine the property’s façade, which is the

orientation of the whole property – which side the
property was built intentionally to face.
2. Stand at the middle of the façade looking
outwards.
3. Use your compass or Luo Pan, with the needle
always pointing North, and ascertain the direction
you, and the house, are facing.
Good to Know:
Feng Shui systems like Flying Stars and Eight
Mansions often require the facing direction of the
property, not the door, to establish the internal Qi
maps or charts. 9
3. Determining the Facing Direction of a Door
1. Stand about one foot outside the door looking

outwards.
2. Use the square base of your Luo Pan to help you
align yourself parallel to the door.
3. Align the Luo Pan’s needle face-to-face with the
North-South axis to determine the door’s facing
direction.
