Objective: After listening to this episode, the students in Grade 11 are expected to identify
claims explicitly or implicitly made in a written text.

4 We are glad to have you today as we continue with our new lesson on radio. I am your host,
7 HOST: I know that you are excited for today’s new lesson. But before we are going to start,
8 make sure that you are in a place where you can comfortably hear our broadcast. I just want

9 ask… how’s your morning routine exercise and breakfast? That will surely help you to have a
10 sound mind, mentally and physically alert for the entire day of yours. (PAUSE) I do hope

1 HOST: As I mentioned earlier, our lesson today is about the types of claims. To my students, please
2 get your modules so you can follow our radio teacher and get ready to learn. (PAUSE) If you
3 are ready, here is Teacher Margie T. Javier from Lagao National High School. For all Grade

8 RADIO TEACHER: Good day students from Grade 11! I am your teacher, Ms. Margie T. Javier. If
9 in the previous lesson we discussed about Evaluating written text based on its properties,
10 now, we will talk about the Types of Claims. We hope that after this lesson, you will be able
11 to distinguish claim in text/message, determine the types of claims presented in a text and
12 formulate claims in an essay written. Once again, those are the objectives for our new lesson.
15 RADIO TEACHER: Please prepare your notebook and pen to be used for taking down notes those
16 important points being mentioned during the discussion. Ok, let's get started.

18 RADIO TEACHER: So, let us learn more about our new lesson for today.
20 RADIO TEACHER: One of the advantages of reading is gaining deeper understanding of a text
21 and this involves critical thinking. Being critical, therefore means advancing your
22 understanding and not just be satisfied with what a text says. It also involves reflecting on
23 what the text states and determines the claims made by the author.

2 Claim is an assertion of the truth of something, typically one that is disputed or in doubt.
6 Claims of fact is a statement that present an idea as true of false. It is something that has
7 existed (past), exists (presented) or will exist (future) which could also be verified using
8 actual evidence. Here are the following examples of the claims of fact
10 “Tuberculosis was the oldest disease of mankind.” Another example, “The coronavirus
13 And for the last example, “The number of online learners has risen due to the pandemic

14 experienced in the country.” All of these examples stating claims of fact because those
19 Claims of value is a statement that present ideas as good or bad, right or wrong,
20 better or worse. These claims are often influenced by morals, beliefs, and
21 preferences.
23 RADIO TEACHER: This time, I will be giving you examples of claims of value. (PAUSE)
24 Here’s the statement, “Traditional onsite learning is more effective than online
learning.”

1 RADIO TEACHER Another example, “Hoarding of grocery items is not helpful to the
2 community.” (PAUSE)
4 RADIO TEACHER: Would you like to have another example? Ok, I will give you

8 So, could you now identify if the statement is stating the claims of value? Very good!
11 RADIO TEACHER: The next type of claims is the Claims of Policy. (PAUSE)

15 contains what should or should not be done. The key word is the verb “should”,
18 RADIO TEACHER: Let me give you an example of claim of policy. “Violators of the
community
21 RADIO TEACHER: Here’s another example, “We should all have access to government
22 assistance at all times.” Do you now know why these two statements are example of
23 claim of policy? Ok, very good! Those statements are examples of claims of policy
24 because it present ideas as solutions to problems and the use of key word such as
25 “should.”
