20 RADIO TEACHER: One of the advantages of reading is gaining deeper understanding of a text

21 and this involves critical thinking. Being critical, therefore means advancing your

22 understanding and not just be satisfied with what a text says. It also involves reflecting on

23 what the text states and determines the claims made by the author.

1 RADIO TEACHER: But, what does it mean by claim anyway? (PAUSE)

2 Claim is an assertion of the truth of something, typically one that is disputed or in doubt.

3 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

4 There are three types of claims. First is the Claims of Fact.

5 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

6 Claims of fact is a statement that present an idea as true of false. It is something that has

7 existed (past), exists (presented) or will exist (future) which could also be verified using

8 actual evidence. Here are the following examples of the claims of fact

9 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

10 “Tuberculosis was the oldest disease of mankind.” Another example, “The coronavirus

11 disease had started in Wuhan, China.”

12 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

13 And for the last example, “The number of online learners has risen due to the pandemic

5
14 experienced in the country.” All of these examples stating claims of fact because those

15 assertions presented need to prove or disprove with factual evidence.

16 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

17 RADIO TEACHER: The next type of claims is the Claims of Value.

18 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

19 Claims of value is a statement that present ideas as good or bad, right or wrong,

20 better or worse. These claims are often influenced by morals, beliefs, and

21 preferences.

22 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

23 RADIO TEACHER: This time, I will be giving you examples of claims of value. (PAUSE)

24 Here’s the statement, “Traditional onsite learning is more effective than online

learning.”

1 RADIO TEACHER Another example, “Hoarding of grocery items is not helpful to the

2 community.” (PAUSE)

3 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

4 RADIO TEACHER: Would you like to have another example? Ok, I will give you

another

5 one. (PAUSE) “Wearing of mask and social distancing is an ideal form of

defense

6 against viral diseases.”

7 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

8 So, could you now identify if the statement is stating the claims of value? Very good!

9 Now, let’s proceed to the next type of claims.

10 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

11 RADIO TEACHER: The next type of claims is the Claims of Policy. (PAUSE)

6
12 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

13 Claims of policy is a statement that present ideas as solutions to problems,

14 usually involving groups, organization or society in general. It is a statement

that

15 contains what should or should not be done. The key word is the verb “should”,

16 “ought”, and “must”.

17 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

18 RADIO TEACHER: Let me give you an example of claim of policy. “Violators of the

community

19 quarantine should be subjected to manual labor.”

20 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

21 RADIO TEACHER: Here’s another example, “We should all have access to government

22 assistance at all times.” Do you now know why these two statements are example of

23 claim of policy? Ok, very good! Those statements are examples of claims of policy

24 because it present ideas as solutions to problems and the use of key word such as

25 “should.”

5 RADIO TEACHER: So, those are the three types of claims.

6 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

7 RADIO TEACHER: Again, to recapitulate what we tackled earlier, the three types of claims

are

8 claims of fact, claims of value and claims of policy.

9 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
