TROUBLESHOOTING SUMMARY

CAUTION
To reduce the possibility of damaging a new engine control module (ECM), all other active fault codes must
be investigated prior to replacing the ECM.

CAUTION
To reduce the possibility of pin and harness damage, use the following test leads when taking a
measurement: Part Number 3823993 - male Deutsch™ test lead, Part Number 3823994 - female Deutsch™ test
lead, Part Number 3824811 - male Deutsch™ test lead, Part Number 3824812 - female Deutsch™ test lead, Part
Number 3822758 - male Deutsch™/AMP™/Metri-Pack™ test lead, and Part Number 3163594 - ECM connector
breakout box.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEP

STEP 1: Check the fuel rail actuator.


STEP 1A: Inspect the fuel rail actuator and engine harness connector pins.
Condition:
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the engine harness from the timing rail actuator.

STEP 1B: Check the coil resistance of the fuel rail actuator.
Condition:
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the engine harness from the fuel rail actuator.

Check the coil resistance of the rail actuator. 7 to 9 ohms? 2A


• Measure the coil resistance from the fuel rail YES

STEP 2: Check the engine harness.


STEP 2A: Inspect the engine harness and the extension harness connector pins.
Condition:
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the engine harness connector from the extension harness connector.

Condition:
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the engine harness from the extension harness.
• Disconnect the engine harness from the fuel rail actuator.
• Disconnect the engine harness from all sensors that have a shared supply or return with the fuel rail actuator.

Action Specification/Repair Next Step

Check for a short circuit from pin-to-pin. Greater than 100k ohms? 2C
• Measure the resistance from the fuel rail YES
actuator RETURN pin on the engine harness
inline connector to all other pins in the engine

STEP 2C: Check for a short circuit to engine block ground.
Condition:
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the engine harness from the extension harness.
• Disconnect the fuel rail actuator from the engine harness.

Action Specification/Repair Next Step

Check for a short circuit to engine block ground. Greater than 100k ohms? 2D
• Measure the resistance from the fuel rail YES
actuator SUPPLY pin on the engine harness
inline connector to the engine block ground.
• Measure the resistance from the fuel rail Greater than 100k ohms? 4A
actuator RETURN pin on the engine harness NO

STEP 2D: Check for an open circuit.


Condition:
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the engine harness from the extension harness.
• Disconnect the fuel rail actuator from the engine harness.

Check for an open circuit. Less than 10 ohms? 3A


• Measure the resistance from the fuel rail YES
actuator SUPPLY pin on the engine harness
inline connector to the fuel rail actuator

STEP 3: Check ECM calibration and clear fault codes.


STEP 3A: Check if an ECM calibration update is available.
Condition:
• Connect all components.
• Connect INSITE™ electronic service tool.
