INTRO :

The United States of America is “the Land of the Free”. Its people truly value and defend
their constitution and their constitutional rights. Liberty being the pillar of the US Constitution,
and democracy being the pillar of the Republic, what could possibly threaten US democracy
today?
Today, we will discuss the actual election's system by taking the example of the presidential
elections. First, we’ll talk about the Electoral College, then, we’ll use a document to highlight
the dangers US democracy faces.

I)
ELECTORAL COLLEGE :
The United States Electoral College is the group of presidential electors that, according to
the Constitution, must be formed every four years for the sole purpose of electing the
President and Vice President.
ELECTIONS :
To run for the presidenty, the candidate must meet mandatory criteria and must declare
himself in each state where he wants the votes of the "electors". In general, final elections
are played out between the two candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties.
DEMOCRATIC PARTY VS REPUBLICAN PARTY :
The Democratic Party is a political party that opposes the Republican Party. It was founded
in 1828 and corresponds to Joe Biden's party, the socialists. Finally, this party is represented
by the colour blue.
The Republican Party is the other major contemporary American political party. It was
founded in 1854 and corresponds to Donald Trump's party, the nationalists. Finally, this party
is represented by the colour red.

II)

Let's talk about what happened on January 6, 2021, as you probably already know, on that
date, Trump supporters invaded the Capitol. Following the presidential elections of 2021, Joe
Biden was elected President of the United States against Donald Trump. Trump hired a
lawyer to recount the votes, which was refused. Following this, Trump convinced his
supporters that the results had been falsified, which made them very angry and they decided
to attack the Capitol.

Pr.Britton-Purdy denounces that this attack was made possible because of deep-rooted flaws
in the system itself. In addition to this, he raises concern about the Electoral College being
influenced. (By who ? => by the different parties and lobbies.)
In his mind, the solution is to switch from an indirect suffrage to a direct one. That way, the
people elect their president and don’t have to worry about their voices being crushed by the
rich and the powerful.

CONCLUSION :
We think that this system is really not good or fair, as it prefers to listen to the voice of the
upper class rather than the voice of the people, which is the most important. America is
known for being called "The Land of Free", but contradicts itself by doing so.
In the document, Mr.Britton-Purdy suggests that a direct suffrage might fit the country better.
Let us notice that maybe the Americans could take inspiration from the English indirect
election’s system.
